HITCHENS WAS A DRINK-SODDEN a$$hole, BUT THIS RECOUNTING OF HUSSEIN'S TAKEOVER IS ACCURATE, BROTHER! MAKING A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO ALLOW A MAN LIKE THAT TO CONTINUE HIS REIGN OF TERROR CAN'T BE CALLED THE MORAL CHOICE TO MAKE, DUDE! AT THE SAME TIME, INVADING IRAQ AND BLOWING UP THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS IS CERTAINLY ALSO WRONG, MEAN GENE! BEING POWERFUL OFTEN MEANS SECLUDING YOURSELF FROM DOING THE RIGHT THING, JACK!

This is terrible. At the very bottom of the list of reasons for the invasion of Iraq, we will find "good will" and "Alturism".

It's all just part of a cycle. Saddam was our weapon then we got rid of him. Just gave us a reason. The same with ISIS. It's conquering by proxy. The middle east is food for the elites of the world...Until the next resource rich area is ripe for Democracy.

I think OP is forgetting the genocide Saddam Hussein committed. Remember him supporting the elimination of the Kurdish people?

I don't think anyone forgot because he used the weapons we gave him in the Kuwait War. And lets not just paint this as a simple genocide, they did try to kill him and today they are the biggest military power in Iraq..besides ISIS. The Kurdish people are not the type to be easily wiped away.

Sorry man, between Al-Qaeda and now ISIS, sh*t is turning into some Mad Max type of sh*t. Iraq is the Middle Eastern version of Mexico, there's just too much money there, billions, so all kinds of mercenaries show up funded by God knows who to see if they can cake and make a quick buck. Some places just need a heavy hand, and the Middle East is one of them. Say what you want, but Egypt, Iraq, Libya, etc were all better off with dictatorship/ruling families than they are now as a "liberated" people. Speak on it.
Yeah, it's Mad Max/Beyond Thunderdome status.
Anyway, it seemed to better when Saddam was in power. He was caught up with fighting Iran, our other enemy. When he needed money for his war against Iran, he dumped a lot of crude oil onto the market. Then, the price of gas went down. Good times.

Toppling Sadam was one of the STUPIDEST moves US has made in a while. But it seems americans and the government haven't learned thier lesson as they toppled Ghaddafi and are still actively trying to topple Assad. Just to create more instability in the middle east.

It was a brilliant move for those who made billions off the war, and continue to bank off the current wars.

Its so funny that we expect people to adopt democracy within only a couple years with no blood and civil wars when the leading western democracies (US, Britain, France) all got that way through bloodshed and repeated unrest over hundreds of years.

Exactly, each region deserves self-determination

How so, pal?
You said people should be able to select their own leaders...unless that somehow affect American safety...Dats not really a choice...what Iraqis or afghans say the same bout us since our leaders for the past 30 years have affected their safety...would it be valid and justified for them to undermine or attack us?
