Now i'm going to give you the two obvious points.

notice todays era consists of two old bigmen pau gasol and tim duncan. proves that Bigs nowadays are faceup bigs with little post moves or desire to hit the block and dominate. and yall wonder why super athletic blake cant get to the finals, or why aldridge is still sitting at home yet another summer.

notice that old school 90's era. had no old head bigs or old head guards in their all nba teams. Everyone was in their prime or slightly out of it, destroying the league all at the same time.

also notice... the same guys that made the ALL NBA TEAMS in the Old school era were a lot of the same guys on the ALL DEFENSE TEAMS. To be a superstar in the 90's you had to do two things. Score and lock people up. Nowadays, just scoring is enough. cause the rules are setup so no one can lock up anyone. just score.

These aren't eras, just 2 seasons.

it's close but I'll go with now just because it's more high paced and more threes. More fun.
It's close tho, just because of MJ but hey he was older that season and this season has LeBron which is close enough
these are seasons in an ERA. i used these two seasons to represent eras. You get the point. stop trying to be a teacher and reply to the thread... or dont.

the 97 season reflects a golden year in the 90's era. there are more. but i used that one for a reason.

this year there's a lot of supposed mvp candidates running around. so i used this year to represent the current era.

now back to the thread at hand.

Hardaway over GP????
my bad. these are not my picks. these are the actuall all nba teams from those seasons. that tells you how much hardaway with that crossover was killing people. and i'm a super gp fan. i would still personally pick prime gp over prime tim anyway of the week.

This is far and away the worst metric I've ever seen used to compare between the 2 eras, just letting you know in advance.
no. this is by far and away the simplest metric. you cant measure stats when the rules have changed so much and the way people play(every single team is running heavy pick and rolls on the ball, this was not the case back then, some teams were known for it. now every team is known for it. that changes how you can or cant defend guys. their are rules in place where you cant get up in guys on defense consistently in today's nba. this increases the scoring ability of the current crop. it helps some guys score more efficiently.

just looking at the names and throw in the rules. defensively speaking. the new era has zone(bodies in the way). but who is really protecting the paint except for a high jumper named DJ? thats about it.

everyone else is just there in the new era list above.

vs the old school list where you can tell those guys are known defenders. who would you rather have defending the paint DJ or mutombo? give me mutombo all day any day. why? because he didnt even have to be athletic to block those shots, he had impeccable timing. and his man defense was great. unlike DJ's where its better this season but vs who? a bunch of weak post players. we know what DJ would do vs a real post player thats not old and gray(timmy). we remember how bynum use to tear DJ a new one every time they played. and bynum had not one, but two bad knees.

imagine Dj playing vs pat ewing, Zo, hakeem, David robinson. every other night. you wouldn even know who DJ was.

THis is why a metric like this works.

put names on these eras so you can put the numbers into context. stop running around with pure numbers and zero context.

And my comment stands. There is more 3s, better ball movement and a higher pace.
If you are asking purely, which "era" had more talent, I'd still go with right now. Especially, if we are really talking about the 2 "eras" not just the two seasons because this current era has Kevin Durant, who didnt play last season and could be one of the greatest players ever when all said and done

This is untrue, teams don't really post up anymore because that has proven to be less efficient but overall offensive sets are a lot more complex. Pick n rolls maybe the center action but there is a lot more movement and misdirection happening off the ball, in the 90s guys just stood and watched MJ or Tim hardaway go Iso or stood and watched Shaq or Hakeem post up.
Also, there may not be much handchecking but that was never a basketball play to begin with and teams have gotten much smarter in packing the paint and forcing opps into contested mid range shots, so defense is better as well.
The overall talent level is slightly better now although it's close but strategy on both ends is more complex and effective than ever and that's a fact

and prove to us how in the hell does this era have more TALENT? lol.

this era does not have any legit back to the basket big men AT ALL. they dont exist. tim is old as dirt. he doesnt count anymore. just like old man kobe doesnt count or kg. hakeem, pat ewing, david robinson, zo. woudl destroy any center from today. DE__STROY. dwight would foul out, DJ would foul out. Do you understand what that means? it means you would have no choice but to double down on these guys. and that means someone is WIDE OPEN. without having to use a lot of energy with penetrating and dishing or running 10 thousand screens and sets to get the ball to someone. just one pass to the block and bam AUTO double team. kick out, swing swing, wide open 3ball or someone cutting thru for a layup and a foul cause the other defender wasnt paying attention to the cutter.

a lot of your favorite players from that 90's era could also post up and would do so if they felt they had a mismatch. this era does not have that skill set for the most part. you notice skinny livingston taking clowns to the post like its nothing. what do you think would happen if GP put you Teague on the block?

after GP abuses teague a few times. the hawks will send a double team. and thats a no no. you never want to double team a Point guard. he can pass to well. its a wrap.
