a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood.

Some kids get diabetes because it runs in their families. This is called Type I diabetes. Researchers believe that a virus or something else in the environment may cause the disease to start. There is no cure yet for Type I diabetes and no way to prevent it.

Type II diabetes is often caused by being overweight. In the past, almost all the people with Type II diabetes were adults. Today, many children have it. Getting too little exercise and eating too many high-calorie or fast-food meals make it easy for kids to gain weight.

I've had diabetes since I was 12. My Mom was diagnosed with Type 1 as a child, and so was I.

Diabetes Type 1 is one of those diseases that can be controlled pretty easily with proper insulin treatment, healthy eating and staying active. My doctor explained to me at a very young age that if you kept taking your insulin, your body would not know it was diabetic because it was given the insulin necessary to function. Without taking the insulin, that's how you end up with legs/toes being amputated. I've been giving myself 2 shots a day for most of my life, that's the only inconvenient part for me, otherwise I feel great.

Been one for 20 years. Has its up and downs but luckily I'm thriving. Have had a handful of "episodes" (scary shyt), but I'm keeping it together.

I have legs, sight (actually improved) and dyck works (for the wife).

Cool feeling to tell people and their natural response is "Wow! Really? You don't look like one?"
