whats the amputation thing about...how does that come about?

People with diabetes are far more likely to have a foot or leg amputated than other people. The problem? Many people with diabetes have peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which reduces blood flow to the feet. Also, many people with diabetes have nerve disease, which reduces sensation. Together, these problems make it easy to get ulcers and infections that may lead to amputation. Most amputations are preventable with regular care and proper footwear. - See more at: http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/complications/foot-complications/#sthash.gs7w5oMQ.dpuf

is it genetic?
Type 1 is.

Type 2 isn't
can we prevent it?
Yep

To some extent

For T1DM there are a few gene therapies being experimented with

T2DM is largely preventable based on lifestyle
What actually is it?
Inability to secrete insulin from beta cells of pancreas in type 1

Insulin resisteance in Type 2
why do kids get it ?

It's a number of variables, which do include PAD and not properly taking your medication. I have Type 1, so I worry more about being hypoglycemic than anything else. I don't have a problem with high levels, my body just can't maintain my glucose levels, so they get very low if I don't make sure and take medication to regulate them. Type 2 is different, I'm not too familiar with treatment or if it varies too much from Type 1. When I was 12, I just kept fainting all the time, I was incredibly tired, no matter how much I slept and I lost a lot of weight in a very short time period. Those were my indications to get checked out. Good luck!

I've had diabetes since I was 12. My Mom was diagnosed with Type 1 as a child, and so was I.

Diabetes Type 1 is one of those diseases that can be controlled pretty easily with proper insulin treatment, healthy eating and staying active. My doctor explained to me at a very young age that if you kept taking your insulin, your body would not know it was diabetic because it was given the insulin necessary to function. Without taking the insulin, that's how you end up with legs/toes being amputated. I've been giving myself 2 shots a day for most of my life, that's the only inconvenient part for me, otherwise I feel great.

Since the age of 10 for me. No one on either side of my family has diabeetus. I was the lucky one. It is what it is though. Eat right, work out and take care of yourself... pretty basic routine. I feel like its almost helped me maintain a healthier lifestyle. At least thats what I tell myself. :yeshrug:

No pens. Old school syringes and Humulin insulin. Its worked for me thus far. Get my blood work done every 6 months and my doc says I'm kosher.

I use the same thing. Syringes and 70/30. Glad to see someone else living with it, and taking care of themselves!
