Utley provides value. If this extension is 3 years 60 million then I would agree it is a bad move but the extension will probably 3 years and around 30 million. Utley will not play in 150 games a season but if he only plays in 100-120 games he will still provide value to the ball club.
Utley has not been completely healthy since 2009 yet look at the results.
2010 = 5.1 WAR
2011 = 3.8 WAR
2012 = 3.1 WAR
2013 so far = 3.2 WAR
One WAR is valued at about 5 million $ so you do the math.
The issue is that Utley WAR won't be good for 162 games. I have my doubts it will be good for a 100. I am thinking more like 90...
So let's say you get Utley for 90 games and a WAR of 3. Pretty good...But then for those other 72 games, you got some random guy in his place with a WAR of -3.0 Then what.
Unless the player is playing all or around 90% of his games WAR is useless.
