I never even used Windows ME. How bad was it?
First off, it was incredibly slow. A massive resource hog, in an era where resources were scarce. Most computers had less than 256mb of RAM back then. With the majority having less than 128mb. shyt was egregious for how slow it was compared to Windows 98.
Programs were not optimized for Windows ME. Like, the most basic of programs, including word processing tools, games, and any and all sorts of programs business run. Programs had problems installing, running once installed, loading, crashing, etc. You conjure up any sort of fukkery that could occur with a program on any OS, and Windows ME had it down pat.
In general, it was just an ustable piece of shyt. And it was at a time where there weren't really many alternatives. Especially for the lay person, since back in 2000 computers and software were a foreign language to the majority of society. Once you upgraded/installed that buggy piece of shyt OS, you were bound to it and it's crippling shortcomings.
And to top it all off, Microsoft had the audacity to brand it "Millenium Edition," with a shiny holographic logo, so desperately trying to be modern and cutting edge with their marketing and advertising. They tried their best to make Windows 95 and 98 look archaic, in an attempt to get people to hemorrhage money on their new product. Except that it sucked. Complete asscheeks.
Needless to say, people were, and still are, extremely pissed about Windows ME.
The fact that Windows XP was released and adopted IMMEDIATELY and WORLDWIDE less than 3 years after Windows ME released tells you everything you need to know about how fukking garbage it was.
Edit: At least with Windows Vista, people still had Windows XP they could rock, and a lot of people stuck with it. And with Windows 8, people still had/have Windows 7 they could rock, and a lot of people have stuck with it. MS tried to forcefeed ME down the throats of consumers by portraying 95 and 98 as outdated pieces of shyt, and essentially "tricked" their consumer base into upgrading.
People felt like they were legitimately robbed when they switched from 98 to ME. So not only was ME trash, but a huge portion of the people that had it felt like they had been hoodwinked by the Big Bad Corporation.
