(The Patriot Act part got me somewhat confused tbh. It's my understanding that you had some freedom reduced so as to ensure the safety of the US. BUt don't want to get to into it because I admit I don't know the specifics).

The United States has more school shootings than EVERY OTHER CONTINENT COMBINED. Why the fukk do you think this is? It certainly couldn't be our nonchalant attitude towards firearms, could it?
The problem is that the current gun laws AREN'T effective ! How many murders by guns in the US by year ?!
So yes, maybe try stricter laws to see what it does. There was an article saying that weapons sells increased dramatically in the region after the shooting in that cinema a few months ago, simply feeding the vicious circle again and again !
EDIT : It's actually the opposite for the drugs... Overly strict laws don't do nothing, but for the guns, it's overly permissive laws that don't do nothing...

It's the main problem its so obvious and so ingrained in the american mind that it's put in writing in our constitution. Let's be serious for a second and admit there isn't 13 states, guns aren't muskets anymore, the king doesn't think we're rebels, and it's not 1776 anymore.

I'm not here to argue for/against the war. Just stating thats your opinion. Off the top of my head, they died for democracy in Iraq, oil for governments, and a strategic ally in the Middle East.
