Fukk your corny debates
Maybe dude's so far removed that he has no more passion and hunger. He's been lackluster and inconsistent lyrically every since he came back from his fake retirement.
Kingdom Come was a lazy ass mediocre dud.
American Gangster was very dope. Gotta give him credit for that. But still he had to go back to his early drug-rapping days and force a concept album to re-ignite the spark.
Blueprint 3 was
It had its moments. But it was like a
ball player who could still occasionally show you flashes of his former greatness. Michael Jordan did still average 22 and 20 on the Wizards. Even though many of the songs were good listening material, the Blueprint 1 era aura of invincibility had dissipated by then and he often sounded like a pathetic old man, insecurely trying to convince you how great he was by reminding you of his glory years, especially on songs like Reminder and Already Home.
WTT was good, but mostly dude to Kanye's production. No real standout verses from Jay.
It's very difficult to maintain relevance and a level of consistent quality material in hip-hop, but that's not even what I'm talking about it. I'm talking about his lyrical ability falling the fukk off. Dude barely even tries anymore. Or maybe he is trying and he just lost it. Or maybe being so far removed from the street life he just ran out of subject matter. All I know is he's been getting away with spitting a lot of lazy bullshyt for a minute now. Like...
"I got a Hublot I call it Tebow, I strap that bytch with a gator band, y'all nikkas play halftime, y'all nikkas like the gator band."
On WTT, he's not even dumbing down for radio play and he's about lyrically on par with Kanye, who is nowhere near an elite emcee.
I was just thinking about this after hearing that half-hearted ass bullshyt verse on 3 Kings, and in light of the gem Nas just dropped. I'm not trying to hold on to the Jay-Z vs. Nas battle. But like it or not, those two will always be linked and compared not just because they had a legendary battle, but because they're from NY, they're all time greats, they came out in the same era and their careers have mirrored each other in many respects; their commercial success, critical acclaim, criticism, ups and downs, and longevity.
But after 10 albums and 20 years, Nas still sound like a hungry, passionate, determined artist in his element and doesn't look like his skill is going anywhere. Jay sounds like a dude that doesn't even want to rap anymore. He's not garbage by any means, but he's deteriorated a lot when you go back and remind yourself of what a monster he used to be, then listen to him now.
