They are called Sons of God for a reason. They are male form. They have to fall to be able to reproduce. They are spiritual beings, but when they fall they become mortal beings that have to die, enabling their ability to reproduce in sin with mankind. Similar to how Adam and Eve were told they would die when they disobeyed God.

Genesis 3:15
