Its 55%.......

I'm not judging a person who aborts, but theres still a stigma with Downs and other disorders, that its an automatic death sentencs. And that's simply not true.

57 percent of people with Downs with Syndrome have a job and they work jobs like fast food or being a janitor...

Out of the entired disabled population only 20 percent of them have a job.

Employment in Adults with Down Syndrome : NCHPAD - Building Inclusive Communities

Five hundred and eleven survey responses were received from 37 states. Fifty-three percent of the respondents were male and 47 percent were female. The majority of the respondents were currently working in some capacity: 57 percent were working a paid job, 26 were volunteers, almost three percent were self-employed, and 30 percent were unemployed. Of the respondents working in some capacity, only three percent were full-time, paid employees, and no volunteers worked more than 20 hours per week. Of those who answered the questions related to type of paid work experiences, the highest percentage of people worked in the following categories: 19 percent in restaurant/food services, 19 percent in office/clerical settings, 14 percent in cleaning/housekeeping/custodial services, 12 percent in grocery stores, and eight percent in workshop/warehouse settings. Although 10 percent of respondents reported inadequate transportation as a reason for unemployment, 33 percent cited other reasons, including lack of job-skill teaching programs and job coaching.

According to the survey results, only 57 percent were employed. Although this constitutes the majority, adults with Down syndrome are largely employed in jobs that underutilize their skills. The present investigation documented that most adults with Down syndrome worked in a limited number of job categories, referred to as the five Fs: Food (fast food and kitchen work), Filth (cleaning and janitorial services), Flowers (florists and landscaping), Factories (light assembly line work), and Filing (office mail delivery), even though a large majority (69 percent) of adults reported that they use computers.

They basically can't support themselves and will need people to take care of them. Which leaves them at the mercy of other people.

People with down syndrome live normal lives, have jobs, live on their own, and even get married:gucci:

I swear everyone on the coli thinks anyone with a disorder is automatically drooling at the mouth and twitching.

You must be retarded to say the retarded live normal lives. I'd abort a baby in a heartbeat over the slightest thing. Let the lil dude have like 1 toe too many he's outta here!

I thought you were implying that only 20% of disabled people overall work. My bad.

But I mean this passage is basically saying that they arent getting hired because of their condition. Or only put in low paying positions because of their condition. Which is discrimination. Again, from people assuming that all people with disorders are delayed.

His first born baby is diagnosed with downs and the doctors are telling him and his wife to abort.

He asked me for advice and I simply said I can't even imagine making this kind of a decision.

Adding to the grieve, both of them are super religious. Your typical church goers that are always there for Sunday service.
Was this through the testing they do at 12 weeks or the one they do in the second trimester? I’ll keep them in my prayers. Some of those test aren’t 100%

Honestly they give you this choice with any diagnosis. Its not just DS. Thats why genetic testing is a requirement now by 20 weeks, so you're still in the range to (legally) have an abortion. I had genetic testing done.
Genetic is not required it is typically only offered to women over 35. I only did it to see what the gender is. I was only offered it because I’m considered high risk due to multiple previous losses.

Exactly. It's to protect the parents, but more importantly to protect the baby. I am a firm believer that there are just some things a child should NOT be born with. Not saying Down is one of them but more debilitating disorders.

The doctor probably just informed them that abortion is an option within a certain timeframe. Like they do anytime genetic testing comes back with some fukd up result. Maybe they took that as the doctor is suggesting an abortion.

If they decide to keep the baby, I just hope they're prepared for how hard (& @ times rewarding) raising a disabled person is. Mentally and financially.

Yeah, I'm not bringing a child into this suffering called life with a disadvantage at the start, that's selfish imo. Their life will be hell and it will be my fault.
Same goes if the doc says my son will be shorter than 6'0, he gotta go. Otherwise he'll have a low self esteem and hate me for bringing him into existence.

Everyone I know gets genetic testing, none of us are even 30 yet. I even got one way back when I pregnant with my oldest 9 years ago. Was never asked, it was just done.

One if the guys religious how is he even thinking about aborting? I’m sure there something against that in the book, second man it’s a common misconception about downs and sometimes it’s hard to diagnose at young age what or how much it will effect them before my little brothers were born both were told they would have downs
ones 21 no problems the other is 18 and has only had a slight hearing problem wen he was like 3 so I’m just saying they can be wrong And iv seen them but really it just comes down to one thing are they going to love them the same way they would a kid without a disability.

Oh and ask your mate and he’s girl to get tests as they believe it can be passed down sometimes
