LL Cool J vs. KRS-One

LL Cool J definitely took lyricism to another level in 86 in terms of rhymes structure and complexity. So we you have to credit him as a pioneer in that sense, as well as his swag (which we called flavor back then) which imo is still unparalleled to this day.

But let's be serious, dude got surpassed easily by Rakim, KRS, G Rap, Kane, and Chuck D shortly thereafter. In terms of the technical aspects of rhyming, Rakim, G Rap, and Kane took it to a whole 'nother level. And as far as content, KRS and Chuck were far beyond LL and his bragadocious raps.

And as far as albums, BDP/KRS dropped 6 straight bangers from 87-93 that were all 4.0 or better with at least two bonafide 5.0s...Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary.

KRS-One was far more advanced than LL. Listen to what he was saying. Jingling Baby, I'm Bad, I Need Love, Jack the Ripper, Radio, Candy, Pink Cookies, Murdergram, etc. were dope songs. But let's be real for a second, people.

LL was more advanced than KRS lyrically than KRS until 93. Walking With A Panther is better lyrically than anything KRS did with BDP in my humble opinion.

LL helped turn rap into popular music for sure. no denying that. he was also an outstanding MC, but he never got to showcase that side of himself after a certain point. he had the raw ass records like ra and kane! but def jam had him chasing other shyt

PLUS when dropped 14 shots to the dome, he switched up on some following shyt...rhyming like everybody else was rhyming at the time with timbs and hoody raps "BUCK BUCKIN EM DOWN"? come on L. KRS never ever ever did this

But I think those are superficial aspects as they compare to the content of what was being said, and in that department, Chuck by a light year. Chuck was straight educating you about Reaganomics, the crack epidemic, structural racism, and media bias.

KRS was more original no doubt but that doesn't change my opinion that L was more lyrical than KRS until 93. KRS made LL look silly in 93 but b4 that LL was the better EMCEE to me.

L had that devil Russel Simmions on his shoulder and than another one with Lyor. Rick Rubin leaving Def Jam hurt LL in the long run. LL was fortunate that Marly came in the picture but in 93 L was DEF on sum followin shyt and Marley was too. But even still 14 shots was just as good as Sex and Violence. Everyone was chasin that extra hardcore shyt in 92/93 including LL and KRS.

Grew up on both them cats personally, I gotta go with KRS.

The CONTENT/KNOWLEDGE/TRUTH this cat was spittin on records when I was a youngin to this day, as a grown ass man, STILL hits your soul IMO.

you focus on "spitting" when rapper legacies are being discussed. LL legacy is for most part being a ladies man. it is what it is, I like LL nh, and bump lots of tracks of his, but his catalog is extremely uneven when matched against someone like KRS, whose catalog is one of the best EVER.
