Vocabulary is easily the most overrated aspect of "lyricism". It matters, but what you do with the words you use, matters far more. To me, DMX paints a better picture with his words than Banks. I visualize what X is saying, his content is more introspective, he's more witty (not in a punchline way) and a far better storyteller. He's one of the best crime storytellers in rap history, actually. I'm not mad at you having Banks over X lyrically, because Banks is better with syllables and punchlines. Which, if that's how you judge lyricism, you would be correct. That's just not how I do it.

X comp to me as a lyricist is Scarface. Papoose uses way more syllables, punchlines, metaphors, etc than Scarface. He's nowhere near the lyricist Scarface is, imo.

Not a 1:1 comparison but look at somebody like Freddy Gibbs.

He's a lyricist, he's a decent song writer, has that aggressive walk you down type flow, versatile enough but he maxes out on that spectrum below a lot of guys, I think even his biggest fans would tell you that. I would say someone like Pac or Face might even max out a tier below DMX on that front, yet they are still very dope lyrically.

You're right. My idea on this changed now. Banks admitted it while dissing.

Yes Banks is dope.

But DMX reached out to him when they were prolly more popular and Banks admittedly declined? While DMX was huge?

Not cool. It would have been great. Now I can see why X was bothered enough to say this.

Banks is dope.

But discipline and work matter. Bless to all.

Yea Banks doesn’t seem like the type to reach out to people unless he’s got a relationship with them, X is at an level most can’t even reach out to, so for Banks to turn down an X feature left a bad taste in his mouth. It’s kind of disrespectful. Now everyone’s calling X a crackhead which makes things worse.

Big L was underground, was X's contemporary and probably the majority of Banks material to judge him on dropped after he stopped selling records. X isn't on datpiff looking through nikkas mixtapes, he has clashed with nikkas like Jay Z on their come up

Styles P ain't my favorite rapper, but I would rank him highly as a lyricist and it wouldn't be because I'm wave riding all of a sudden. Same for black thought, that nikka don't spit no jingles, he's rapping on a level that might actually take some degree of study. That's not to say you HAVE to be complex to be a lyricist, I'm just saying...anybody, DMX included saying Banks isn't a lyricist probably never listened or hasn't listened Banks in a long time. Now is he a star? Does he have songs (and thus lines) that you can reference in a split second mid convo? The nikkas that DMX clashed with at the height of his career do.

How do you know X hasn't listened to Banks? Maybe he has listened, and didn't find it compelling enough to call it great. :manny:

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
So X people say he won
Jay people said he won
Others say it’s a tie

I would ask for names but I already know....
Most people say it’s a tie. X people say he won. I’m not sure if Dame said it but that means nothing being that he been slandering Jay like crazy. X said Dame pulled him to the side and said he won that. The only people on Jay’s side I seen flat out give it to him was Sauce Money. Ski edged it to Jay. He didn’t say it was a clear win tho. I believe Irv said it was a tie. Bottom line is a nikka can’t tell me X would’ve had a prob battling Banks when he was giving hell to nikkas like Jay who’s an all time great.

I don't look at it as a diss, personally. He didn't say Banks was trash, he didn't even say Banks wasn't a lyricist, he questioned if he was and asked Scoop to prove to him that he was.

It's like this, if someone said list the best 3 point shooters in NBA history and nikkas say "Curry, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Hubert Davis" nikkas who aren't familiar gonna be like "Hubert Davis? Top shooter? Really?". Even though statistically he's as good a 3 point shooter as you can find. Not knowing, isn't a diss to me. If he would've said "fukk outta here, Banks is ass", then that's a diss.

breh,...it is a diss my guy.
it is a clear diss emcee to emcee.
no way around it at all.
maybe you like dmx and both banks and hate to see it, I dunno.
yet this is a bonafode diss of the type.
you can not walk back or move away from this addressed

I'm wondering if Banks does release a diss track how this will affect his relationships with The LOX. Won't those guys defend DMX on default? I'm all for a new track addressing this though.

Or diehard wood face fan

Ooooon fire?

...
I tried doing this for other great rappers and all I can think of is wisdom type bars. Nothing lyrically spectacular it's really not that easy for anyone tbh and if scoop named 4 bars I think X still would have doubled down on his opinion I think:yeshrug:
Banks said he had to catch a flight but be mightve been the first to reach out the first time around
