Finished the album. Second half didn't keep up with the first half for me personally.

Banks was fire throughout, from a pure MCing stand point, but it got kinda boring and it's mostly the production. Not all of the beats are mediocre, but a good portion of them. I kept like 6 tracks, but the production to me is not on par with Banks rapping at all. Who did these beats?

I can't grade it yet. As dope a lyricist and MC Banks is, something is missing from his presentation to hold my attention for a project this long. I had my concerns once I saw it was 17 tracks. If he cut it down to 10, it would in album of the year contender. But it gets kinda bloated to me. The way he delivers his message and content kinda stays formulaic maybe my biggest critique of his rapping. He a rapping ass nikka for sure, but that's it. And there's only so much I can listen of that, without providing more depth.

Banks has more depth than people give him credit for, there are jewels on here but they get lost in this production, a good handful of these songs just sorta blend together with no real identity to them

Yeah, I'm not saying he doesn't have gems in his music, but when it kinda all starts sounding like 1 songs, and the cadence stays the same, it kinda hard to distinguish one from the other. It all kinda flowed together after a while and not in a "good cohesive" way, more in a "this literally sounds like the exact same song". On some Future shyt, except with really great rapping.

I must say the Panic track with the Ari Da Kid chorus slower and singing the new sound could help Banks break singles in the industry...Its a good tempo...Quick bank jewels broken up with a slower tempo new age sound its a cross over that would work.

That’s definitely a top tier song on there

So far, my only complaint is the mixing. Some of these beats could come out so much more sharper if they were mixed better.

I’m starting to wonder if Banks is going for the rugged sound to compliment the gloomy mood he’s trying to achieve because I hear local artists who’s music sounds crisper.

Griselda makes the same style and their stuff sounds super crisp..... but some ppl don’t care about that type of stuff so that’s just my little nitpick so far

not sure what went wrong with Roc Marci’s audio quality

No doubt. DJ Premier’s old engineer used to mix things to sound more dirt as a stylistic choice, and I like that dirty sound, but with Banks’ voice it can muddy the vocals up a bit.

shyt…some of the mixing on Bandana is some of the worst I’ve ever heard, but everyone gave it a pass because it was over Madlib beats. Shame that no one is extending that courtesy to Banks though.

Roc has had his own share of terribly mixed vocals. Rosebudd’s Revenge is one of the worst mixed dope albums I’ve ever heard, and parts of his album last year (Mt Marci) are also awfully mixed. He sounds mush mouthed on many tracks.

I bet Roc had his verse terribly mixed before he mailed in the verse to Banks, and then it got doubly mixed bad again.

what do u mean? Like he was forcing himself to rap in a deep voice and it was causing damage?

even his regular interviews he has a deep voice, its just his rap voice from like 2008 onwards he switched to a high pitched voice. Idk
He has a naturally deep voice but he definitely did exactly what Evidence used to do, which was force it deeper as a stylistic choice.

Both of them rap in a more natural vocal tone now. The way Banks sounds from V5 up to now is more of his natural voice, and examples like below are him purposely rapping in a deeper tone.

I agree with you. I think Banks drops more jewels than people think.

@FreshAIG I think Banks is an emcee that references a lot of his previous verses and bars. You get rewarded for listening, and a lot of his music references itself. You know how rappers like Currensy, Evidence, and Boldy James all do small little “world building” things in their catalogues? Banks does that too.

I caught gems in here that I know I would’ve missed if I hadn’t spent the past 7 days bumping his 2010’s catalogue.

I definitely think there would be more identity with a shorter run time. 70 mins in 2021 is a very long album.
