It is an award show that is broadcast on TV, thus it's about being creative in your attire or dressing up
No need to be the against the grain type and dress like you are going to the corner store for some milk and eggs. Especially when you have lots of money

It matters because he has the means to dress creatively or dressup, and more importantly, he chose to go to an event such as that, where folks who are not trying to prove something, usually are creative in their attire or dressup. Why go to such an event if it's too much to change your normal everyday attire?

I don't know what is Bill Gates' dressing down wear, but my dressing down wear is what Marshawn has on because I wear that when I just chilling and hanging around the city , backyard party or house etc
