I truly believe that student loans should go away as a whole, that's what will drive the costs of college down. Right now there's no market pressure for colleges to lower costs, rather they raise costs knowing financing is available. Take away financing (loans) and costs come down dramatically. Same reason why cars are so expensive now, they know there's all kinds of loans they can finesse people into.

I know a guy in a similar situation. Making minimum payments and taking forbearances will keep you in a hamster wheel.

Yep that is why they love putting people on a forbearance and never trip about it. Kats will ask for maybe a 3 month forbearance and they are like don't worry we will put you on a 6 or 7 month forbearance....they want that interest to add up.

Though I knew kats that hustled the forbearance game and just would get put on it and still make double payments. That way when he ran into hard times he could easily adjust what he paid.

I personally think it's a crime that personal finance and money management aren't mandatory classes in high school. You have millions of 18 years old rolling off the assembly line each year and these predatorial financial institutions are looking at them like food. Unless you have middle to upper middle class parents who placed something aside for you and/or personally put you up on this student loan hustle, when you leave high school at 18 you're not prepared in the slightest for the real world. Yet you are pressured into choosing a career that will shape the next 40 years of your corporate slavery life, and the debt that comes along with it all within a few months.. yeah.. what could go wrong.

I took out loans when I was 18 and at the time, I didn't even understand how the interest rate would impact my loan. I borrowed $7000.00. When I graduated I didn't make enough money to pay my rent and buy food, so I went into deferment. I know owe $72,000.00 in student loan debt.

I'm 23 years old and have $200,000.00 in student loan debt. Each semester taking out a loan was as easy as clicking a "renew" button in an email sent by the lender. How is a 19 year old supposed to know that going to college would ruin his life forever? I'm now working 2 jobs, 7 days a week plus registered on "arrangement" sites and youtubeing how to live in my car. Which I've decided I'm going to do once my lease on my apartment is done. I want to see a change, but paying what I can monthly barley covers the interest. I've thought about suicide many times.

Student loans are a scam. Schools charge more for that reason. It also gets young kids into the credit world. Never had a credit card until I got to university.

It's much harder in the States as costs are higher but every chance I got I applied for bursaries. Do well in school, pick good majors, it will work out in the end. Nikkas 200k in debt with a Soc degree :mjlol:

Thank You.

For some of us who ain't had it like that, sometimes you gotta get loans. And what I was speaking of the federally backed loans (staffords), not the additional private loans that cats can get as well.

You got nikkaz like this @Leviathan clown talking shyt because he on his way to a PHD with no loans. nikka, that shyt is an exception for far too many people. Far from the norm.

For those who gotta get loans, you can't be out there bullshytting when you get to school and majoring in trash that won't recoup if you finish. That's the bottom line and that's why I say that shyt is an investment. For the college should be a right crowd, that's cool, but it ain't reality. I'm definitely in favor of community/junior colleges being free or even lower of a cost, but ain't shyt free in this capitalistic society.

Exactly, the whole shyt is predatory, from jump. Personal Finance isn't taught at the high school level, so you giving kids with no experience with money and some entire FAMILIES with no experience with money and "expecting" them to use it properly. :rudy:

On top of that, a lot of this would be offset if wages haven't been stagnant for the past 40 years.

If the system was set up to actually reward going to school and what not there's no way people would be struggling to pay loans. I'm just now getting all of mine under control at 30. And that's just getting them to to the point where I don't have to think about them and I can still afford all the shyt I like.

The very moment our generation becomes the power holders this needs to be issue NUMBER ONE in terms of the country's economy. Because if this isn't solved you are gonna see a MASSIVE drop in home ownership, which is a massive drop in equity/taxes and a massive drop in American's ability to have self-determination.

America basically loaned an entire generation of people into destitution.
