I don't think most of you nikkas blaming Lue watch basketball with any kind of regularity.
First of all why was he expected to call a timeout when LeBron himself didn't even want a TO until a sec or so was left and he realized JR didn't know wtf he was doing? For half the play, Bron himself was either asking for the ball, or telling JR to pass it to Hill in the corner, which he did.
Also, why do you nikkas think Lue would even be able to/get a timeout? The refs were watching the play for any infractions, like they were supposed to. In the 4 secs left in the game, no they were not going to suddenly realize the coach was calling a TO and abruptly stop play.
If yall are talking about those situations where the coach goes to the ref beforehand and says "make or miss I want a TO upon possession", that's cool, but stop acting like it'd be normal or expected for a coach in Lue's position to do that. He was the coach of the team at the line, not the coach of the team on defense. Its the defensive coach that usually makes that call to the official, and any nikkas with any history of watching basketball know this.
No offensive coach really expects to get the ball back in that situation, and I think its fair that in the cases that they do, they believe their players on the court to have enough sense to either call a timeout or put the ball back up...the latter being what JR should have done.
But as for expecting a coach to get a timeout on the spot? Nah. In much less chaotic situations it usually takes the refs a couple of seconds and the player on the court literally screaming and pointing at a ref for a TO. Acting like if Lue had just been more focused and a better coach he would have gotten it is laughable.
Secondly, how do yall not know that on almost all timeouts, especially full TOs, coaches usually leave the huddle for a bit to convene with their assistant coaches, get inputs from them and come up with what they're going to tell the team, and THEN get to the huddle with a play call or pep talk or both. That shyt is routine. You can't make it seem like that was Lue abandoning his team.
Thirdly, I don't fault Bron for sulking. Not at all. But I interpret his question to Lue entirely differently. It was passive aggressive to me. LeBron knew they had a timeout, he didn't need Lue to confirm it. He asked it to Lue and had him confirm it in front of JR for a very specific reason. I actually salute Lue a bit after watching this again because to me it seems like he answered him quickly in the "yes, now let's move on" way because he immediately got down and started talking strategy while LeBron was doing his theatrics.
