Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Essentially Medicine, IT, Engineering, Analytics are concrete and fields that have quantifiable skills, unlike Liberal Arts such as Art, History, English, Women's Studies. Often these fields have a strong emphasis on mathematics and science which many students don't have the interest or aptitude to take these majors.

What 18-year old wants to learn about linear regression or recursive functions, or data structures? Nope, they often want to take a major that "doesn't require math, because it is hard" and hence we have a generation of 21 year-olds 130K in debt with a degree in Communications....

I was a Comp. Science/Engineering major and it takes quite a bit of discipline to tackle any STEM-related subject.

If you don't have discipline or focus, college will be the least of your problems.
Thank u. One of my kids is getting ready to apply for college. This is great information. We're focusing on just that, things that others do because it's not hard and it's usually means the math and science. She's a junior now and taking calculus and physics. Repped

I only blame myself. I chose to go to college because 1. I thought it was something I was "supposed" to do 2. I thought it would be "fun" and 3. I wanted to put off entering the "real world" for a few more years.

Well you went for the wrong reasons. Don't advise people not to go. You are looking for immediate gratification but a degree is something you have to think about long term.

Whether you go to college or not most people will end up working a job they don't really like. And the only thing worse than working a job you don't like is working a job you don't like and not being paid a decent salary. If you want to get a degree just to say you have a degree then you should get it in something that pays. You can always pursue your passion on the side and it will be much easier to do with money in your pocket.

Some gonna have a bunch of kids who are antisocial that major in STEM, sacrificing their social life and humanity, or have their time of their life in communications degree and be broke afterwards. :martin:

The college bubble gonna burst and it gonna look ugly. Spending 40 years of your life on a major/career that you hate will cause people to do :demonic: shyt like clapping people.

I'm trying to understand this quote more. Are you saying because they didn't attend a HBCU, that they're struggling. Or are you saying the free ability to take black studies courses freed you up to take a more marketable degree? Could you elaborate?

I'm saying his overall college experience likely would have been better at an HBCU (if he's black).

I socialized, don't get me wrong, but I was like a monk with studying and I always networked to get internships and involved with projects that my professors would run just for experience.

A whole bunch of psych majors I knew ended up working at:
Starbucks
Pretzel Factory
Red Lobster
Applebee's
Macy's

30-45K in the hole and going back for more (Grad School)

The RNs/NPs/MDs however are caking heavy after changing adult diapers and other dues and now travel all over the world on a whim...

STEM wins....

Jobs are played out :dame:

STEM already has the petroleum industry failing like mad and automation is going to kill off many skilled jobs in the near future.

It's being a damn entrepreneur or death. We got to get off that job hustle and control your own life.

Even STEM isn't guaranteed these days. I had people that graduated with me that didn't try to get internships beforehand or do any networking and are still having a tough time getting that first job. May be different in other parts of the country though.

There's no such thing as an unemployed 4.0
And if you majored in (Any) Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Chemistry or Nursing and had a good GPA, it shouldn't have been difficult for you to have had a paid internship at least 2 of your summers in colleges, and to have gotten at least an entry level job in a career of your choice within a few months of graduation.
Really, I don't know anyone who had a good GPA who wasn't employed with a few months of graduation.
That includes East Asian Studies majors, Women and Gender Studies majors, African Studies, Political Science, Communications, Spanish, Sociology, etc.

I get it and I just use what I earn from my job as free capital to invest in my own business really. The system uses you and you use the system....

I learned more from basic common sense and street knowledge then I ever did from a outdated ass textbook. How often do we use Trigonometry?
Have you ever been in a house, my nikka?
You know it was built? Trigonometry.
Calculus built your cell phone, laptop, desktop, your internet connection.
shyt, the lights in your house and the heat in your house are Physics in Chem.
If street knowledge taught you more than school, you were in the wrong major and classes.

Most people who demand you to be a damn genius to get a living wage, don't believe in a good standard of living for all. Better off doing what you love, that isnt over saturated, and learn how to sell it to people.

To be a damn bio chemistry major and make less than a garbage man out of 4+ years of traumatizing schooling just screams glutton for punishment.
