An SSD is usually enough to upgrade most computers. If you're still using a spinning hard disk look into SSDs. SSDs pretty much extend a PC's life.

If you still prefer Macbooks. Used 2015 Macbook Pros are still on sale (the last greats)

Dell XPS 13 refurbished models are on sale at Best Buy.

Get a used Thinkpad off Ebay and slap an SSD in that bytch

I own 3 laptops:
Macbook Pro Mid-2010 (Dual SSD + HDD/8 GB RAM)
Thinkpad T430 (HDD)
Thinkpad X230 (SSD/8 GB RAM)

The X230 was the cheapest ($150) and it's my most used right now. It runs just as good as my Macbook Pro and it's even better in some aspects because the video card in the Thinkpad is far more superior. If you plan on running any apps that are graphic intensive you'll be good to go. Thinkpads are also known for their reliability so expect to own yours for a while if you go that route.
