Only thing I can think of is that the game probably just needed more time to cook, and that's why they apparently didn't send out review codes until I think today. The Day One patch is likely going to fix a lot of things, otherwise it might've lost a lot of points for that. It reminds me of how FF7 Remake got dinged in plenty of reviews because some of the textures looked rough. Square didn't even touch those up until Intergrade came through. But at least with that, the game was fully playable and ran at a stable performance from start to finish, so Square probably figured they could take an L on some of that as long as everything else works the way it should.
With this, it's a brand new IP with a lot of expectations riding on it (due to the history of the game), so I can see why they might not have wanted to chance it until the last moment.
No reviews till release is insanity.

The impressions are basically - combat = very good, everything around it = so-so.
