I don't know, although the show doesn't bring in the ratings and it is certainly a critically praised show that is talked about and brings Emmys to FX. I imagine they would want to continue the show as long as Louie does. Since it is returning spring next year, he could have told them he could only commit to 7 episodes or had a story arc for that amount of time.

Yeah.

He took such a long hiatus because he was kinda burned out.

He writes, directs, stars and I even think edits the show. Hopefully this was just a compromise as opposed to taking another long hiatus.
