And one thing you gotta keep in mind, even though he had bars he relied a lot more on delivery. That shyt will make basic shyt sound god tier...till you read the lyrics

Luda sucks. Yea he got "bars" but he dont say shyt. nikka aint no damn lyricist hes a fukking punchline rapper.

Above the fray.
The lyrics were never there. The audience that appreciates bars gives it up to anybody who can spit. Luda is copping pleas here.
He had his chance on some high profile features to spit.......instead he said
"you never stood half a chance, like Siamese twins!"
And laughably said it like it was a hot punchline

I've definitely seen Ludacris, as well as Busta and Red and some others, get less acclaim due to their use of humor. I think we who really listen and acknowledge their rhyming ability know better. But dudes who don't get all deep into that unless it's some hard shyt or some super-lyrical shyt, they tend to look at dudes like Luda and Busta as entertaining 'funny' or 'party' rappers first. I've seen/heard real life conversations where some people just don't put them in that category and one of the key reasons is how they come off as wacky and humorous in their videos. Or I've heard people say "he can spit a lil' bit but he don't be rappin' about no real shyt". :yeshrug: I remember some people legit being surprised Ludacris could rhyme when they heard the Made You Look remix, and he had been around for a couple of years by then. It's the same thing that some people would say about LL whenever he did a "I Shot Ya" or "4321" type verse, they'd be surprised he could rap "like that" because of the perception that he just makes songs about women.

I see Jay's point. Luda's a weird case - he had hits for days and could flow his ass off but always came off jokey...some of his videos even seemed like they were catering to kids with the cartoonishness. Maybe he shoulda did more shyt like Southern Hospitality that found a good balance between being funny but still hard.

He's like Jim Carrey in my opinion.

Jim Carrey came on the scene as a hilarious over the top goofball, then later when he wanted to do serious roles (which he was good at), you really couldn't see past him as a funny man.

Ludacris is one of the most underrated rappers ever in my opinion. If you listen to his 1st single "What's Your Fantasy" , he absolutely kills it lyrically but due to his videos and his humor, he's not really looked in the same manner as most MC's whose revered for their lyricism.

Ludacris is one of the most complete rappers ever in my opinion.

Luda could rap his ass off but, his albums outside maybe the first two didn’t translate content wise. At the end of the day good music is music regardless of content if done right. Look at OutKast for example. Andre drop a damn album where he song on it 95% and people LOVED. Wayne made a damn Lollipop song, people loved. Hardest negros walking was singing that shyt here in New Orleans. Luda just made a lot of wack shyt on his albums.
