It's just the context of who he was traded for. Everybody knows AD is great and a future HOFer. But put it like this - If 24 hours ago, it was announced the Lakers are moving AD would you have thought they could get Luka back? And if 24 hours ago, it was announced the Mavs were looking to move Luka, would you have thought AD, Max Christie and a 2029 1st was the best offer they could get? If the answer is no to both then you could paint the picture for why the reaction is like this.

He’s great, really great. He’s just not a 25 year old superstar.
I'm not even necessarily saying I agree with the trade (I see pros and cons but I would not have done it if I was the Mavericks), it's just how nikkas are treating the return of AD like they got back Steven Adams lol.

Who would you rather have for the next five years.... AD or Luka?

One will still be in his prime while the other one won't.
Luka. My point isn't I agree with the trade or I would've done it, it's fans acting like they got back nothing for Luka

If the purpose is to win this year, I can make a strong case the Mavs are in a better spot. Long term, obviously this is a win for the Lakers.

I don't understand people not getting this, nobody is saying AD isn't a great player in his own right. It's just to only get that package back for a perennial All-NBA level player at 25 is just not enough, period. The reason this is getting this reaction is because it's so unprecedented.

Yeah it’s just the combination of his production, age and long term outlook

If this had been AD for Embiid, most would be calling it win for Philly or at the very least a wash. If this was AD instead of Randle for KAT we would’ve called it a win for Minnesota. If this was AD for Booker, this reaction likely doesn’t happen.

You’re trading an All-NBA 2nd/3rd team type player in his 30s for an All-NBA 1st team player in his mid 20s

The Mavs will still be good right now, I won’t even be shocked in the slightest if they finish with a better record than the Lakers do. It’s what happens after this season that gets murky.

They should have gotten more in return than they did, which is what people's main point is. They got one pick in return and didn't even get someone like Reaves or Knecht.

If that's who they insisted on doing the deal with, then they should have maximized the return as much as possible.

In the last three seasons:

- Luka took the Mavs to the WCF in 2022 (losing to the eventual champions Warriors, where he was arguably the best player in the series)
- Luka took the Mavs to the Finals in 2024 (where he was definitively the best player on offense in the series).

I don't understand why y'all keep putting all this emphasis on his weight issues and lack of commitment on defense. It's completely irrelevant in this context because he's a top-3 player and has proven himself to be the #1 option on a contending team. He brought that franchise back from irrelevancy, both on the court and their monetary value as an NBA aegis.

Even if the perceived issues you had of him didn't exist, nothing would've changed over the last three years, so what possible logical reason could there be to trade him?

There isn't one.

The best that AD could do leading a team was get them out of the 1st round, one time. He couldn't even get the Pels on the map, in any sense of the word.

Beyond how lopsided this trade is in a vacuum, when Kyrie and AD both end up inevitably declining and the Mavs need to retool, what star is going to willingly want to go to Dallas after how they disposed of Luka like they did? This is going to deter free agents and any players who're they're wanting to draft in the future as long as the Adelsons own the Mavs.
It's an extremely lopsided trade. It's like trading one of the big 4 QBs (Lamar, Allen, Mahomes, or Burrow) for Stafford.

:mjlol: if thats who the Mavs wanted, we gave them that. And Luka is not redundant to Austin and Knect bro, they're just all cacs.
So you agree? :russ:

But naw seriously in terms of their contribution being scoring and doing so from the perimeter, not necessarily their games although Austin has pretty much been a destitute man's Luka this year. You would actually think one of them woulda been in higher demand because of that. Not suggesting you hold the trade up over Max or anything. But he does have the most coveted skillset in the league and he makes pennies.
