Initial thoughts on album...
It's really good. I honestly feel like this was Lupe's way of showing "Ya'll want an album like this? I could do this easily." This album is basically the answer to people who say they don't like Lupe. With that said, unless a Lupe fan is super strict about needing bars to be heavy AF and the hip hop "pure", core fans will like this too. I'm a versatile listener of music, so I don't need my hip hop to be a certain way as long as it's not ignorant AF and destructive and shows a degree of skill. That's all there on this in spades, is what I expect from Lupe, so that's why I really like it even though it's definitely not what I'm used to from him.
First off, this album is WAY better than Lasers. This album has soul and grit and production that doesn't feel cheesy AF (sans Wild Child and Pick Up The Phone), which Lasers was saturated with. Lyrically it is not as dense as Food & Liquor 2, but it's so much more fun to listen to and Lupe obviously sounds way more interested on DL than on that.
This album is not a masterpiece. I think Pick Up the Phone is cheesy as fukk, and while I enjoy Wild Child more, it's also cheesy as fukk. Made in the USA is the only track on the first half I don't love, and the album clearly lacks the masterful cohesion of Tetsuo & Youth -- which was basically a perfect album -- The Cool or Food & Liquor.
But then again, for those who follow Lupe on Twitter, it was very obvious what this album was going to be at least a year ago. It's a LIGHT album, but it's still a really good one. I give it a solid B, or a 3.5/5.
Kill, Tranquillo, Dopamine Lit, and It's Not By Design are definitely the best songs on here for my own sensibilities. I know It's Not By Design isn't for everyone, but I came up on groovy sounding disco house music like that, so that beast + those guest vocals + Lupe bars was enough to sell me all the way.
Jump is the most Lupe-ish track on here and probably the favorite among his fans. City of the Year is fukking sick if you remove Rondo's verse. NGL is highly relevant and should be a must listen to any young brother or sister coming up in the hood. Promise is EXACTLY what these nikkas wanna here, and I rock with its simplicity heavy.
