Lupe at his best is dope, I think it is a question cause I think AZ is a lot better lyrically personally, just because you have an abstract style at times doesn't automatically make you better. Your word usage is a large part of it, the effectiveness, AZ's is near perfect. He has exceptional multies but also content within those multies, that isn't an easy thing to do, so many artists do the multies style but are talking pointless bullshyt or aren't saying shyt, AZ brings it across flawlessly, he's 1 of the best lyricists to me. Lupe at his best is dope, but he isn't at his best enough for me.
AZ has content and multis

Lupe has content and multies, and metaphors and multi-layered punchlines and references.

It's not about that though, it's about the quality of the aspects used not the amount they are used. What do you mean by references?

attention whoring? lupe's angle is one of if not THE sickest in hip hop history, his metaphors and double entendres are second to none

The moment a Lupe stan realizes most hip hop fans find his raps boring, pretentious and pseudo-intellectual.

Lupe makes a variety of references from regular street shyt to black excellence to anime and manga and all of it sounds like authentic and cool. It's nothing forced.

and yes they both have high quality in their best aspects, it's just that Lupe has more aspects and literary devices that he excels in more than AZ.

Remember this is LYRICALLY. Lupe's suspect beat and hook choices are irrelevant. Even in his worst music he showed top tier lyricism

Not sure. Lupe often sounds extremely forced to me at times, I don't like those puzzle raps he does, seems more in line to a crossword puzzle than lyrics. That isn't dope to me at all. AZ makes a lot of dope references too. Mm I don't agree. Yeah, I'm not judging Lupe's other aspects, strictly lyrics, for me AZ takes it. I don't agree with the last point too, Lupe at his worst is really awful to me, I don't remember off the top of my head a bad AZ verse.

Lupe at his worst is likely so because of delivery or a wack beat. 99% of the time it aint what he's saying though. Lupe's damn near automatic with the verses. Like AZ is

Dont get me wrong, I like AZ. i like Do or Die, A.W.O.L, Aziatic, Pieces of a Man and Format

But he plays it real safe. to the point where some of his shyt is interchangeable. He always has these general street knowledge raps. Nothing wrong with that, but he doesnt stray far from it.

I think it's really wack lyrics along with wack flow/delivery/vocally etc. The lyrics may sound complex but when you actually listen to them and break them down, it's like are they really effective? And often the answer is no. It's not to shyt on Lupe, cause I like him at his best, but often people seem to overhype shyt because of how it sounds rather than what it is.

On his new song he has the bar...

"You're like a contemporary museum of art, that farts"

That isn't good lyrics/lyricism to me, no matter how anyone tries to put it, that shyt is terrible and he often has corny/ineffective pointless lyrics, it's very off putting. I like it when he's focused.

I don't think AZ always brings it lyrically for the most part. Street knowledge is a hugely diverse topic, but he's done all sorts with the storytelling/content etc...

EG:

Ho Happy Jackie
Fan Mail
Never Change
Your World Don't Stop
Street Life
Payback
Having My Baby
Do Me This Way
Good For Nothing
Dead End

Just a few off the top. Plenty of topics, he has the lyric rhyming style, storytelling (which is diverse), street shyt, G shyt, fly shyt. Conceptual, and he always brings it across, throughout his career I think he's been a consistent first rate lyricist. I can't say the same for Lupe who to me has flashes and misses.
