Define "this type of rap."

Ras Kass fans would like to have a word with you.

Does this album sound like anything from the golden age? Whatever golden age you subscribe to?

No. People were bumping Pac, Wu, Nas, Jay, BONE, Outkast, or let's go farther back....Rakim, LL, Slick Rick, PE, etc.

Do any of the great albums of the last 30 years sound like this? Does "Death Certificate"? Does "Illmatic"? Does "Fear Of A Black Planet"?

So what era would you place this album in....that it would have people :ohhh:over the lyrics? The sole reason it's a topic of discussion in 2015 is because of message boards and Youtube.

It's funny you mention Ras Kass when he was never remotely popular, either....and that's fine....but you guys are taking an album....and sitting there confused why more people don't appreciate it....when in any other era it would be an anomaly with only a handful of fans. It's like going into a film forum and spazzing because nobody is discussing "Enter The Void" by Gaspar Noe.

Every album you named could be seen on your typical Greatest Albums List. Pros and Cons to that default way of looking at things.

We going to sit here and act like a great album is going to sound like another great album? Which one of those albums from your "Golden Era" sounds like E.1999/Art of War? You only consider that the "Golden Era" because plethora of styles was pushed by big execs. I don't allow record companies that much credit to what eras of hiphop are great, this is a culture. They are vultures.... Back to the albums

Many GREAT albums aren't promoted to the masses, doesn't make them any less great. And also doesn't mean they weren't popular among certain heads. Soul On Ice is a highly revered album among emcees.

wow they really drove the 'Stacey Dash waterfall' line home by using a clip of her in 'All Falls Down', even though I didn't look at it like that before it still made sense

I consider it the golden era because I seen it first hand....both 80's and 90's. I'm older than a good 90% of this board. You trying to tell me why I consider the golden age, the golden age, is exactly what @MegaTronBomb! was referring to when he said "pretentious". You're probably young enough to be my son. :heh:

Some albums are certified beyond reproach....again, to use the movie analogy, let's take "Godfather 2". It's a popular choice as a GOAT level movie because....well, it is a GOAT level movie. You can sit here and say "well, it's a safe choice, for a default 'best of list'"....or however you want to word it....but it's solidified among movie buffs for a reason. How you feel about that is largely irrelevant.

The same goes for something like "Death Certificate". Again, I was there first hand.

And none of the albums I mentioned sound alike. That's not the point.

The point is this album would never be remotely popular in any era....and that's fine....but instead of enjoying it in relative obscurity, like let's say "Soul On Ice"....you guys want to sit around and talk it up like it's more important than it actually is. It would be a foot note in any era it came out in....so why be shocked it's not receiving more attention and accolades?

If it's great to you why does that matter?

You right, and I catch myself pointlessly debating and contradicting my own beliefs by partaking in them... So props.

You didn't have to edit your post and say I could be your son though :russ:

The sad part about it is if something was to happen to Lupe. Knock on wood. The sales would sky rocket. And dudes will be praising this album like crazy eventually.

I always say put aside the bias/antics and just take in the music. Then judge it from there.

Im not screaming classic at all. Gotta let time set it. But I would say just based off art and creativity alone this is the album that should be in museums to listen to.

That video actually makes the song seem trash. I already had loosely followed it similarly to the flash pic nature of the youtube jernt. But seeing it is embarrassing.

I'm back to thinking this nikka sucks.
