over the lyrics? The sole reason it's a topic of discussion in 2015 is because of message boards and Youtube.Every album you named could be seen on your typical Greatest Albums List. Pros and Cons to that default way of looking at things.Does this album sound like anything from the golden age? Whatever golden age you subscribe to?
No. People were bumping Pac, Wu, Nas, Jay, BONE, Outkast, or let's go farther back....Rakim, LL, Slick Rick, PE, etc.
Do any of the great albums of the last 30 years sound like this? Does "Death Certificate"? Does "Illmatic"? Does "Fear Of A Black Planet"?
So what era would you place this album in....that it would have peopleover the lyrics? The sole reason it's a topic of discussion in 2015 is because of message boards and Youtube.
It's funny you mention Ras Kass when he was never remotely popular, either....and that's fine....but you guys are taking an album....and sitting there confused why more people don't appreciate it....when in any other era it would be an anomaly with only a handful of fans. It's like going into a film forum and spazzing because nobody is discussing "Enter The Void" by Gaspar Noe.
Fred.

We going to sit here and act like a great album is going to sound like another great album? Which one of those albums from your "Golden Era" sounds like E.1999/Art of War? You only consider that the "Golden Era" because plethora of styles was pushed by big execs. I don't allow record companies that much credit to what eras of hiphop are great, this is a culture. They are vultures.... Back to the albums
Many GREAT albums aren't promoted to the masses, doesn't make them any less great. And also doesn't mean they weren't popular among certain heads. Soul On Ice is a highly revered album among emcees.

You right, and I catch myself pointlessly debating and contradicting my own beliefs by partaking in them... So props. If it's great to you why does that matter?
Fred.
