I know that Macklemore owns his own label.
I don't understand why you dukes are saying that having a indie label, being signed to an indie label and being on a major is the same then..

But anyways the biggest difference between indie and majors is that majors are obligated to maximize profit in order to maximize shareholder value. While an indie you're only obligated to do whatever you agree to do when you sign the contract which can be a bunch of things. All from being a popstar like Mac Miller to deep underground, depending on what you wanna do.

Because the independent game is slowly looking like a wasteland right now.

The best thing you can do at this point is to have a solid management team, get the best deal possible and start a joint venture.

Either Sign to a Major, or do it yaself. Signing to a indie in 2013 is stupid as hell.

I fully agree that signing to an indie is stupid, they'll fukk you for your bucks as well. But starting your own indie can be a good thing, like for Macklemore. But going by probability theory, going major is probably better.

And I co sign that solid management is the most important thing, only problem there is that management will squeeze money outta you like labels.

True.

Sometimes, you have to make sure that your management has your best interests at heart.

Meh, they was gonna steal rap eventually
Didnt' happen when Bubba Sparxxx, Eminem and Paul Wall were going plat during the same period.

Didn't happen when Beastie Boys, Marky Mark, Vanilla Ice, 3rd bass where getting plaques in the same period.

BUT, I can see why a rapper like Macklemore has a place in hiphop.
He's doing something different, I think it's as simple as that. Listen to Hot97 or some shyt like that on any given day, and Macklemore is something refreshing even for me and I can imagine that it's even more refreshing for our fellow cacrens. Even when he's doing his most commercial/poppy shyt like Thrift Shop, he still puts some thought into his video and the subject of the song (materialism).

It takes a LOT of money to start an Indie... I'm sure someone like Macklemore had a friend or relative that had tens of thousands to put behind him...

It's funny because most people that are successful Indie are either backed by a drug dealer or a rich relative...

I think he's stacked dough over the years, from shows and shyt.
He's been grinding for years. He found a producer, they did the myspace thing, mixtape thing, ep thing and now after like 6 years they set it all up dropped and dropped the album.
And cac station support music, he got radio play on pop stations, alternative stations and on. Unlike major hiphop stations, that won't play something different unless it moved plenty records first.

But like you say, everyone can't start a label.
Too much time, financing risk, knowledge requirements, capital requirements and on.

He's not on a independent label, he's on his OWN label.
I think people understand the difference between signing to Rostrum and owning your own company, or at least I hope they do.

See, and this is what I'm getting at. Unless Macklemore started his label with his own cash, someone invested in him. He has to pay somebody. He ain't paying himself. And let's be honest, all those "Wingz" and "Jimmy Iovine" records weren't cutting it. He needed a big single. Insert "Thrift Shop" unto the scene.

The gimmick in indie music is to go mainstream by supposedly "mocking" the mainstream. To the average listener, it's a "good" mainstream record and they buy it in bulk. All while the old fanbase buys the album thinking the artist is sticking to their roots while the new fanbase is larger and going to think this is a "new" artist on the scene. Artists like Macklemore work this shyt to perfection. Don't be surprised if he does a joint venture with a major label soon, completing his "selling out" process.

It's a dope video, I think rapper need to get back to shooting real videos again.

A few dudes just standing around girls, money and cars is embarrassing at this point. There is no concept to videos anymore, shyt can really help your song. But then again you actually need a concept to your song to have a concept to your video :pachaha:
