Yea the album is kinda corny but i liked his mixtape 'The Language of My World'.

went to one of his conserts hoping he would play some of those songs but only got new songs.

But was a great consert he know how to preform and get the crowd going so have to give him props for that.

Some would say this is corny to. But hes telling the truth.

Truth!!! They really don't get it, do they? :russ:

NIP just responded to your post for me essentially. Indie artists retain more of a percentage if they're NOT signed to an indie label. Independent artists not signed to ANY label still have some sort of investor or money man behind them that put up the money for them to start and maintain their careers. And those people have to be paid back with interest.

So yeah, indie artists may see more revenue. But they also have just as much overhead. And let's face it, very few rappers are motivated enough to keep it going on their own... they'll be running to a label after a while to do the work for them.

Exactly... cats really think Independent means sitting at home spamming Twitter, YouTube & peoples Email all day then performing at Open Mics & Karaoke Nights while selling blank CD-R's out the back of their trunks for $2 a piece... :heh:

***REAL*** Independent Labels & Artists have at least a good $25,000-$100,000 behind them...

It takes money to make money in this world... that's in *ANY* industry... :steviej:

You commented on the difference between a completely independent artist and an artist signed to a major label. I talked about a a major label artist and an artist signed to an indie label. I agree with what you're saying because it aligns with the point I was trying to make. Every deal is different, but the more control you give up to a label the smaller your percentage of the revenue will be (that doesn't mean its always the wrong move). I also would agree that an Indie label could low key rape an artist with no business skills more than an independent or major label and not provide them with any value for what the artist gives up. That's a risk you take dealing more with people than through lawyers.

this is dope. ironically he's making the exact same arguments that the people who are mad at him for selling so much are making

homie suffers from white guilt a little too much though

Yea, but thats the way he approach a subject in his raps. When he speaks on drugs, sexism or poverty he knows he comes from a good white middle class home so it will come of as corny at times. But he dont care. He still does it because he have the power to do it without selling out. Its just the new album is more "hispter" and hard core hiphop fans wont look past it.

Yeah, im not saying hes for every ones cup of tea. But he should not be written of as a new Mac miller thats destroying/stealing hip hop.

Anyone that has listened to his old stuff knows this.

I have no idea why people don't get this simple statement. Independent labels are nothing these days but major labels with smaller budgets and less marketing. You can still get screwed over just as easily signing to an "indie" as you can to a major. The only difference on an indie is that the deals could be more "artist friendly" but it comes at a cost. An indie won't have you selling out Madison Square, Staples Center or Philips Arena when you're first blowing up. But you can get everything under that...

The only reason people sign to majors now is the ease of marketing and exposure to larger arenas and tours. So as far as Macklemore is concerned, his fanbase is growing thanks to "Thrift Shop" being a huge hit. Once these (white) rap artists on indie start making consistent hits and getting sales, it's going to be a wrap on the indie scene... folks better pay attention. These guys have no problem selling out if need be.

Exactafukkinmundo!!!!!

I've been saying the same exact thing about independent labels for over the last ten years.

He's not on a independent label, he's on his OWN label.
I think people understand the difference between signing to Rostrum and owning your own company, or at least I hope they do.

I know that Macklemore owns his own label.
