No one ever talks about "Me or the Papes"!! That's one of my favorite Jeru joints! Ridiculously dope!

But back to Skillz. He said after his album dropped, that he didn't love rapping anymore. He had a lot of hype and buzz. Then the album came out and nobody copped it. I think that made him quit. He switched to deejaying and started claiming what everybody else who flopped claimed in the early 00's, that he was "ghostwriting".

But this joint here:

CLASSIC!!

Large Professor played this beat on Stretch and Bobbito in like '94, when he took his SP up there and was just playing random beats live. Then he gave it to Skillz like a year later, but it didn't make the album, lol. So they just left it as a b-side gem.

it was 96....skillz needed an angle with all the heat that was droppin..his angle back then was he was from VA spitting like an East Coast cat..skillz could rap..nod factor and move ya body def got some airplay but skillz had no IT factor about himself...still doesnt really to this day..skillz made his bread with the dj'ing and ghostwriting..he's eating off rap just not as thee star

Uptown, NYC
one of my fav freestyles of all time

Classic!

I recorded this live that night! This was the freestyle I was talking about earlier. About a year after this, he came back to NYC to make his rounds again with Lonnie B and they rapped over Showbiz & AG's "You Know Now" remix beat and Guru's "Respect The Architect" remix beat that Buckwild did, and Lonnie B went CRAZY and kinda outshined Skillz, lol. But during this era, we all thought Skillz was about to come out and make some noise.

He had labels in a bidding war back then. I almost feel like there was just too much classic sh*t dropping at the time. And if you didn't have a monster presence, you flew under the radar and probably vanished.

exactly like i mentioned in my other post...skillz prolly needed a gimmick more than most in the mid 90s..he was just an ordinary cat who could spit

I remember the article from the '99 Source magazine that had Missy Elliott and Timbaland on the cover. In the article, there's a sidebar with Timbaland talking about upcoming projects. He revealed that he'd just finished a new album from Mad Skillz. So somewhere, there's an unreleased Skillz album produced by Timbaland.

I still remember being upset that the "Clock Strikes" remix was on Timbaland & Magoo's Welcome To Our World album, but it was the version without Skillz or the beat switch.
