Jay-Z is unhappy with the way Colin Kaepernick handled his workout on Saturday -- our sources feel Colin "turned a legitimate workout into a publicity stunt."

As we previously reported, Colin bailed on the NFL's workout Saturday and held his own workout instead. Colin claims he wanted transparency -- insisting the NFL would not allow him to have media at the workout.

Sources close to Jay-Z tell us ... Jay is unhappy with the way things went down because he feels the league was genuine in trying to give Colin an opportunity.

Colin went through with his workout at a high school nearby and reviews are mixed. Some scouts are reportedly impressed with Kap's arms strength and talent. And, others are reportedly saying he looked average at best.

You think the NFL needed Jay’s permission to set Kaep up? Obviously both parties may have had a say in this but I think some of y’all are giving Jay too much credit.

I don't think permission is the right word. If we're to believe Hov wanted Kaep to get a shot, we can assume this workout was what both the NFL and Hov settled on. Maybe Hov thought "it doesn't matter how it's set up, if you're gonna excel you're gonna excel." Or...maybe he thought what better way to give Kaep a shot while also ensuring failure to settle this issue for good. Who knows.

I'm just very wary of industry people (be they in music, media, etc) who pop up and say shyt like "see this is why we needed Hov on the inside. This wouldn't have happened without Hov." Because ultimately these people are going to defend him no matter what, to preserve their relationship with him. We saw those people trot that talking point out this weekend. The NFL's attempt to retain black fans is happening at the same time black QBs are taking the next leap talent/success wise...it's kind of a perfect storm for the NFL, and Hov is clearly positioned to help them navigate and take credit.

Jay is one of my favorite rappers and hustlers and I respect his hustle but most of you can sugar coat it all you want the NFL bought him on to be a mascot while yes he will profit from it he is still being used as a mascot like it or not.
