Former Donald Trump campaign official Michael Roman is seeking to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from prosecuting the former president’s election interference case, alleging in a Monday filing that Willis appointed her alleged romantic partner, private attorney Nathan Wade, as special prosecutor in the case.
The filing, which seeks to remove both Willis and Wade from the case, said both prosecutors engaged in an “improper, clandestine personal relationship during the pendency” of the case—one that Roman claims resulted in Wade being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and Willis paying for and taking Wade on vacations around the world with taxpayers’ money.
Willis spokeswoman Pallavi Bailey told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the DA’s office will respond to Roman’s claims “through appropriate court filings.”
Roman cited unnamed sources close to Willis and Wade to back his allegations, claiming the sources confirmed the two had a “personal relationship” during ongoing divorce proceedings Wade is allegedly involved in.
The filing claimed that Willis and Wade violated public money laws and their oaths of office and had conflicts of interest.
Roman is one of 19 defendants in the election interference case and was charged with seven felony counts including conspiracy to commit impersonating a public officer, conspiracy to commit filing false documents and a violation of Georgia’s racketeering act.
Forbes could not immediately reach representatives for Willis and Wade for comment.
Tanya Chutkan, the judge overseeing the election interference case, was targeted through a “swatting” attack Sunday night in which law enforcement responded to false reports of a shooting at her home. Chutkan was unharmed as it remains unclear who the call came from.
Roman worked for Trump’s presidential campaign in 2020 as director of Election Day operations. The campaign official was charged on multiple felony counts accusing him of putting together a fake slate of Republican electors from states like Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Nevada to try to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, the New York Times reported. In the same election interference case, Trump was charged with 13 counts including conspiracy to impersonate a public officer, conspiracy to commit forgery in the first degree and a violation of the state’s racketeering and corruption act. The former president is seeking to have his charges thrown out on the grounds of presidential immunity.
