Simply put, this question isnt about whether we think he's a great player or not. It's obvious, you can see the great ones early in 99% of cases, so we're not getting crazy here...

Question is, do you think he's gonna end up closer to/on the Brady/Montana level, or closer to/on the Marino/Rodgers level of players? Or somewhere in between where many people put Manning/Favre/Elway?

I'm undecided right now, but I keep in mind that in Year 2 (1984), Dan had the greatest season ever for a QB and went to a Super Bowl, and never made it that far again (1-2 in AFC Championship). Rodgers won it all in just Year 3 as a starter (2010), and we all acknowledge the NFL crowned him and thought he'd be destroying the NFL for years to come, yet we're going on a decade later and he's still chasing that same success...

So Mahomes making the Super Bowl in just Year 2 as a starter and being the best player in The League has been seen before, and clearly he's gonna end up somewhere on the GOAT board, but where do you guys think he ends up?

He certainly has the potential to be the GOAT QB, but there is a hell of a long way to go.

Really comes down to how much value you put on winning Super Bowls.

Not a chance in hell they can keep that same offense together once they pay Mahommes. That is going to be where we see if he can really make that jump up in the rankings.

Y’all too quick to crown. If he wins I’d say he might have the greatest first 2 seasons by a qb ever. He’s not Goat but he has that DNA.

Also remember that it’s not only about the player. It’s about the players around him, coaching, organization, health and luck/situation. Montana and Brady were greats but benefited from great coaching staffs, an organizational identity, great players and luck (cheating in Brady’s case).

Chiefs need to get better in order for him to reach the heights of Brady and Montana.

Can we just let his career play out first? This first take espn hot take hyperbole culture where we have to crown guys the goat right away is stupid. Like Max Kellerman saying he’s already the Goat.

His ability is amazing. Marino Rodgers and Mahomes are the three most physically talented Qb’s I’ve ever seen but it takes more then talent to be one of the greatest ever. It takes longevity and accomplishments in a sport that’s hard to get both. What if he gets injured?

even team sucess isn’t guaranteed. Look at Marino who got there early and never went back.

Especially in a hard cap league when Mahomes gets his money it’s gonna be different. When you have to pay your Qb you lose other key players because of the cap so your window to win a lot of times is the Qb on his rookie contract

This...

As his career continues and inevitably they lose alot of the star ancillary players, I'm gonna be watching closely to see how he elevates marginal players and support. For me, it's never about the rings as much as it is consistency. Brady could be 3-6 instead of 6-3 in Super Bowls right now (if Vinatieri misses a kick or two, if Petey feeds Marshawn the rock, if Shanahan and Quinn manage the game better), meaning Bradshaw would have more rings, and I'd still call him the GOAT because I've consistently seen him perform on the biggest stages at the highest level...

I gotta see how he plays in the biggest games and I gotta see how he leads and elevates lesser talent. He ain't gotta win all the Super Bowls for me...

3 years later update...

He's starting his 5th championship game in just his 6th season. Kelly played 11 years, we consider him a Top 20 quarterback; Ben played 18 years, we consider him a Top 20 quarterback; Manning played 18 years, we consider him a Top 3 quarterback; Favre played 20 years, we consider him a Top 10 quarterback; Rodgers has played 18 years, we consider him a Top 10 quarterback...

All of the aforementioned played in exactly five conference championship games. But not 5 in a row and not 5 in 6 seasons...

6 years in I'm comfortable saying he's worked his way into Top 15 status. That's even if he wins the Super Bowl this year. I'm not ready to crack a Top 10 with him yet, though I can concede his Top 10 case is listenable now. Dudes were trying to give him a Top 10 case three years ago, was ridiculous. It's legitimate enough to make now, though personally he ain't Top 10 for me yet...

It's gonna be real interesting to see the career arc with his peers from here...

I need him to finish this off

He’s gonna win MVP but he needs to win this game on Sunday and win the Super Bowl and win SB MVP to solidify his greatness

This dude is a magical football player

If he wins, there's only one other QB with a MVP and a Superbowl ring not in or going to the HoF (Joe Theismann)
Nah there’s actually a QB with 2 rings not in the Hall of Fame

Jim Plunkett won two SBs with the Raiders and he’s not in

Edit: Read the post wrong Jim Plunkett never won NFL MVP
