Making 6 figures online in Africa. Should I move out?

I'm from a country in Africa and I've managed to make a six figure income from my online business. I own a pretty large and well known website with millions of visitors from all over the world. I make money through advertising. Things have been good for the last 4 years and still growing. Should hit mid 6 figures this year. Been wondering about whether I should move or stay in this place.

On the downside, we have a lot of systemic problems with corruption, poverty and tribalism and they're not being solved any time soon. Plus once you pass a certain level of income in these parts, EVERYBODY got their hand out. On the plus side, I live like a fukking king out here. Mansions rent from about $1200 a month round here, I have two staff working in the house and I can bribe my way out of anything if I ever get into trouble in future.

Given the extensive list of pros and cons, was wondering about moving out of this place, since I have location freedom with my online business. What would you guys advise? PS I am single, childless and 28 years old.

But in all seriousness, since you’re in a good financial situation at a relatively young age, your decision should be based on lifestyle and what you actually want to experience.

How far bros. We dey dis side dey manage (Washington D.C.). I already know you're from Naija.

But to your question, if you're in Lagos then I'd say stay. To be honest, if you're making 6 figures in Gidi at 28 then you're in the 0.01%. At that level, MOST, of Nigeria's systematic issues could be remedied by your income. Like you said, you can bribe your way out of most situations, so you're in a sense above the law.

For someone who's a Naija boy through and through once you come to a USA, Canada or UK you'll feel like fish out of water. Yes, things are "easier" here, but the familiarity and elite status you enjoy in Nigeria will evaporate over night.

If you have true remote flexibility then I'd suggest trying Jo'Burg, South Africa. I think it's the best combination of Western infrastructure and systems, but with the perks of African familiarity and freedom. I was there earlier this year and as a 23 year Nigerian who's spent most of my life in Nigeria but significant portions of my life in the US, I found it a good in between.

2nd on that list would be Accra, Ghana. Very similar to Lagos, but with less commotion and slightly better infrastructure and systems.

Alternatively, I think you could do a half and half type engagement where you spend 3-6 months in the US/UK/Canada through long term AirBnbs and such, then the rest in Nigeria.

Look, I love Nigeria but at times it can be a headache. But once I'm out too long I itch to return. I think a good set up would be one where I come to the US to accomplish "time sensitive" tasks then go to Nigeria for day to day business.

I agree with everybody saying just travel, you don’t necessarily have to relocate now. You have a great opportunity to be able to Airbnb in another city or country for 3-6 months at a time to really get a feel of another place, while still being able to come back and enjoy living like a king in a lower cost country that you know the ins and outs of. shyt, you could even take a year or two traveling between countries if your business is fully location independent.

Traveling more, you’ll understand the pros and cons of living in other areas a lot more, and at the same time probably come to appreciate certain pros in your home country as well. Because one thing you’ll find out as you travel, no matter how cool places seems initially, EVERY place has cons too, and once you settle in there for a long stay you’ll really get to see how well you’ll deal with that.


So yeah, no need to fully relocate, just pack a bag and see what’s out there.

Yes, I'll contribute to the online marketing threads. Though I've noticed the threads here focus on a lot of grey hat areas which from my experience doesn't end well
