nah those shows he's talking about in the 90's were ghetto breh
in the house
moesha
the parkers
the cosby show and a different world were on a totally different level
I can't speak on In the House (never watched it) and I somewhat agree when it comes to The Parkers (even though I love it), but Moesha, at least for the first couple of seasons, was just an edgier, more urban version of The Cosby Show. They weren't trying to present black people like idiots and clowns. Frank had the Saturn dealership and was taking care of Moesha and Myles on his own before he met Dee. He was filled with morals and principles. Moesha made dumb mistakes every now and then like teenagers do, but she was a strong, soulful character with a lot of insight and perspective.
I just can't subscribe to the belief that there's only one way to present the black experience on television. Fresh Prince and Martin are highly regarded shows and they didn't try following the Cosby Show formula. Things have to evolve at some point and adjust with the times. I'm not saying Malcolm's feelings are unjustified, because he clearly wanted to elevate Malcolm & Eddie and UPN wasn't having it, but I believe that as long as the execution is good, there are several different ways to portray black characters on TV.
