Male R&B standards are also way higher. musiq soulchild can't sing passionately about fukking a girl on her period with his thumb in her ass. Lil Durk on the other hand... The closest thing we had to that was The-Dream. Also, male R&B singers have a negative stigma of being simps, something rappers can get away with by rapping about other hardcore shyt. Brian McKnight can't talk about heartbreak and then also talk about being on the block with the homies shooting at the opps. Rappers can.
I got a thread somewhere in the archive talking about how being a street rapper really is a cheat code

Durk can talk about fukking his bytch, shooting the opps and being in the trenches on every hook and verse. No one will tell him he needs to switch it up or do something else

if you are singing or a non street rapper you will be criticize for your style and content
That’s why I think if he got the push, Brent Faiyaz would be the one to blow cause his lyrical content leans most to the “toxic” shyt people eat up.

he’s independent tho, he will never be a star

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
Leon Bridges is my guy

I don’t know if he meets certain people’s standards for mainstream but as others have mentioned that standard has changed

I chalk this up to the game changing—just like we don’t see male or female R&B groups dominating the way they used to

No, your list is basically the female version of my list. None of them are getting any more play on mainstream radio than the guys I posted. I’m going to just agree to disagree though.
Her was at the top of the list and her album just flopped:mjlol:

Also how is Ari Lenox mainstream lol

HER has plenty of gold and platinum singles

plenty of people with mainstream songs and features have albums that flop

That song came out 5 years ago

Remember back in the 90s there was a clear distinction between the R&B crowd and the hip hop crowd.

R&B dudes weren't on that gangsta shyt

Now you can't tell anyone apart
This is a major issue. The sound is too blurred where it’s harder to make any noise as a R&B male

Most men as far as newer music will gravitate towards rap. A big reason the female R&B game is thriving is because women actually support

I don’t remember who but a male poster was tryna clown brehs for listening to R&B

Why do people talk as if they don’t prefer rap music

the artist are trying to cater to the consumer and the labels are only selling what the consumers demand

As a culture and casual fans of the culture prefer rap. It is what it is at this point

Having a preference is one thing. Completely disregarding the other genre is another especially when the sound is very similar

I’m sure it’s people who will listen to Rod Wave all day but turn they head up at an actual R&B male on the same production

Rod Wave content is not mostly about falling in and out of love like R&B

his content is street trenches getting out the mud. That’s the cheat code
