He may be in trouble legally, but I remember that case where dude was acquitted after shooting the people running away from robbing his house in TX. Don't rob people.

But naw fukk that I woulda been pissed too but he def had something sensitive on that laptop.
I usually backup all my stuff, atleast once a month or sometimes weekly, my drive is encrypted, and i have theft protection so if it does get stolen I wouldn't even need to do all that.

No, that's not self-defense. Obviously the thief was in the wrong but a laptop isn't worth someone's life.
Not to mention it's a public safety issue as you could hit someone with a stray. He probably won't be but he should be charged with attempted murder.
