Hearing this reminds me how much rock music has been almost completely deaded from popular culture.
My first thought. Rock music had about 2838383838 different sub genres popping at different points in history. Nowadays it’s crickets when it comes to mainstream rock popping

it died because it was completely stale.

Not really. The labels collapsing and merging while giving 6 figure deals to every band between 99-03 combined with file sharing made a ton of bands break up or go independent. They just aren't pushing any new bands. Hence why bands like Tool can take 15 fukking years between albums yet still do well touring and with albums.

that didn't explain why the music is actually stale and hasn't been innovative for decades hence why the genre is dead in the water.

rock and roll music was pushed long past it's expiration date.
