That makes it a good throw too though.

Recognizing a safe play at 30 yards downfield? I'll take that any day.

We've all seen it far too many times when they show a replay of WR's wide open down the field and the QB goes for the check down for minimal gain or force a pass to a covered WR which then leads into an interception.

Although the throw was 30 yards, the play design allowed Mariota to lob the ball into space, which is an easier throw than most throws 30 yards. The play design is a deceptively easy read to a wide open player that any average NFL QB makes. The throw itself doesn't shed light on Mariota's ability to throw beyond 10 yards into coverage. That is @Dlee954 's contention. When Mariota did try to throw further than 10+ yards to any player that wasn't open, he failed. Winston, conversely, threw into tight windows down the field in his game.

That's the thing, I don't want my QB's to routinely make throws into coverage :merchant:.

Find the open WR and I'm happy.

I know what you're saying though, Mariota hasn't shown the ability to throw into a tight window yet. But the arm strength should be adequate, so we'll see.

The read and throw are encouraging from the perspective Mariota was able to make the right read, but I don't think they are good barometers of his ability to play. These type of pitch-and-catch throws EJ could make in his first year. The throws he couldn't make and the reason he was benched are the throws into coverage, which Mariota rarely attempted in his game. Do I think Mariota stands a chance of having a strong first year? Yes, but great QBs make throws into coverage, similar to what Mettenberger does and has done throughout.

I watched cut ups of both QBs and formed my opinion. Many scouts and scouting enthusiasts don't watch full games. They just watch the throws. One can form a good opinion without watching all a QB's games so I don't understand your point. Moreover I don't really understand why you're so mad at me but carry on. :skip:
