Nah they did the right thing by not picking leading men for supporting and even main characters sometimes. If they cast an A lister, then they run into the same problem that DC has with Batfleck. An a lister is never gonna want to commit 15 yrs of his life to playing a role like that. But if you get somebody who's down and out like RDJ, then they got nothing to lose and they'll sign a 25 movie contract cause they need the money
Casting a leading man (even potential) is not "casting an A lister" so don't put words in my mouth.
None of the main Avengers were A listers before - other than Scarlett and Tony depending on how you view Downey's problems.

They "were the heart" because Marvel wrote themselves into that corner.
If Ant-Man was Pym (instead of Lang) and he helped with Tech, created Ultron etc they would have shared the narrative load, and the narrative shine.

If the Avengers had to come together now I think Rhodey would be the best leader.

what about "he can't act" are people not getting. the man can barely make his lines sound convincing. he telegraphs that he knows the outcome of a sequence, at the start. he is constantly trying to act, and seldom comes over as being someone genuinely in the emotional state that he is trying to portray. he has about two facial expressions.
then he is too short, is not showing hero levels of dedication (weight), does not have a hero jaw ... there are too many things going against him.
Stop.
Mackie is a good blockbuster black leading actor.
He is beasting in this role.
Trying to downplay dude as an actor is a no go.
