Right, in most cases these labels are going to own their masters because they have the leverage during negotiations unless the artist has crazy buzz or good representation.
I experienced this first hand witnessing a cousin of mine attempting to negotiate a production deal with a record label they wouldn't budge on any ownership of masters including a percentage of ownership.

To have all them years in the game and be in debt still is crazy. Seems like only Mariah managed to get out of a long career in the deep millions of profit man. All these others got fleeced. Her run was short, but she bailed on the major label quick after recouping and started releasing smaller self owned music on her own imprint and got out of debt and is making a decent living for herself.

Looking back and it's amazing to see so many black women musicians literally damn near struggling or broke with gold and platinum albums now they in their 30s, 40s and hell early 50s doing chicken circuits or doing jobs working at the bakery factory
