Voted No on Question 7. The money won't even go to education.. the MD comptroller is already on record as saying that this proposition won't increase money for schools. Last thing we need in Southern PG is a damn casino :snoop:

I voted no as well, but Franchot kinda misrepresented himself in the video. He's in the ads because he's positioning himself for his run for governor in 2014. Yes, he is Maryland's "Chief Financial Officer", but not a CFO in the regular sense. His main job is really to oversee the collection of taxes, and he also pays the state's bill and other accounting stuff.

Written in the actual bill is that about 50% of the revenue from casinos goes to the Maryland Education Trust Fund, which is explained here: [ame=http://vimeo.com/50640493]Ed Trust Fund on Vimeo[/ame]

There's been talk like "Oh, the money from the lottery was supposed to go to schools, but it never did." The trust fund was only established 10 years ago, and there was nothing in the lottery bill to set aside money for schools.

Simply put, THIS TIME, money would go to schools. :smugbiden:

The bill does a lot:
allows a 6th casino spot in Maryland (National Harbor)
creates a Gaming Commission*
permits table games
transfers responsibility for leasing slots from the state to the casinos
reduces the share of revenue that goes to the state*

Stuff with an asterisk is why I voted against it. Everything else was overdue. The way the gaming commission is set up gives too much power to the governor.

If the referendum fails, the general assembly will probably approve table games in the next session, with less revenue cuts.:ld:

Voted yes. People want to be dumb and lose their money? At least keep it in-state and get taxed. Plus it creates jobs and money in education.

It won't increase money for schools because some officials already took money earmarked for education to support other projects. That money will be replaced by casino money. So while it's true it won't increase education money, it will nevertheless go to education.

Put it this way fam, if Question 7 gets voted "no", then we'll find out next year that we'll have to cut money somewhere else so we can fill the gap in our education budget. Or we'll have layoff teachers. :snoop:

:salute:

even if the money didn't go to the schools, do you realize how much bread that joint would bring in? :mindblown:

esp @ the harbor - traffic going north would basically be funneled to that area

Norfeast groovin…
nikkaz really don't see the bigger picture, National Harbor being so close to D.C. and Alexandria makes it a prime spot to get that casino money. I live right by the Harbor, there are all types of high rollers around there and what better way to get more money from them than a casino. I don't see how voting no improves things, at least by voting yes we get more jobs and much needed revenue coming into the state.

Next ballot we need medicinal mary. :win:
