It won't increase money for schools because some officials already took money earmarked for education to support other projects. That money will be replaced by casino money. So while it's true it won't increase education money, it will nevertheless go to education.

Put it this way fam, if Question 7 gets voted "no", then we'll find out next year that we'll have to cut money somewhere else so we can fill the gap in our education budget. Or we'll have layoff teachers. :snoop:

breh, Annapolis ALWAYS messes up the state's money. ALWAYS. These idiots don't know what they're doing and I am 100% confident that if this passes, then they will find a way to mismanage this money too.

Yeah that shyt is possible, but I do know if we don't get extra money, our teachers and education system is gonna get hit next year. There are other steps we can take to make sure our officials are accountable. That's what's great about democracy :win:

There's just too much positive about getting extra money from taxes PLUS adding more jobs if Question 7 gets a "yes". We can't screw this up.

nikkaz really don't see the bigger picture, National Harbor being so close to D.C. and Alexandria makes it a prime spot to get that casino money. I live right by the Harbor, there are all types of high rollers around there and what better way to get more money from them than a casino. I don't see how voting no improves things, at least by voting yes we get more jobs and much needed revenue coming into the state.

Next ballot we need medicinal mary. :win:

most of the people who will be losing money in the casino's wont be high rollers........they'll be broke people looking for a come up.....

they'll leave the casino even broker then what? Mortagages dont get paid, food doesnt get bought, lights get cut off, etc etc.....

when someone's back is against the wall like that they are more likely to do some crazy shyt to get out the whole.....

but thats the thing........they wont.

They talking about building a casino in downtown baltimore too............fukking madness

I'll put it to you like this, if your that pressed to gamble that'd you allow that fate for yourself then I'm sure that same person would go to West Virginia to give up that guop then still come back home to Maryland to raise hell after the fact...:yeshrug:

to the people already hooked, maybe.....but these casinos are going to pop alot cherries for people who havent already been caught up. The convenice of them being a few minutes away instead of a hour is going to be a problem for them, the people already hooked and the people who live in their neighborhoods.

And this is coming from someone who used to frequent the casinos

I feel you, but to me that's just an unfortunate consequence which is outweighed by a lot of positives. I just think that those so called popped cherries are just as likely to do that elsewhere. I have no interest in gambling personally, I know people that do gamble and win/lose big all the time. Point is people that don't find it appealing to do will continue to do so and those that love to gamble will find ways to fukk themselves over regardless.

I disagree with this thinking.

Stupid people will do stupid things, irrespective of what's readily available to them.

the tables are the floodgates as far as a casino is concerned.

Voting no keeps them closed

My good friend used to be DEEP in the poker games around here. The worst gamblers are already gambling. They just do it illegally or they drive up to Atlantic City or out to WV every 2 weeks. Regular dudes with regular jobs who regularly drop a couple stacks in a game. Its crazy but at the same time they're not hurting anybody. The worst story I've heard is a dude who won $60,000 in AC and lost every penny in 6 months.

I'd be curious to see the statistics of crime and increases in gambling addiction for people living near casinos.

Anybody from Detroit? How those casinos work out?

http://www.casinowatch.org/studies_research/New Casinos Impact.pdf

Some highlights:

Professor John Kindt of the University of Illinois reported in the Michigan State DCL Law Review in 2003 that, “in a convenience gambling economy, discretionary spending is diverted from other forms of entertainment and consumer expenditures to casinos and other gambling establishments. Restaurants, hotels, and other competing local businesses lose revenues and fail.” The NGISC reported this cannibalizing effect in Atlantic City where 78% or 245 of the local businesses and restaurants near the boardwalk went out of business after the casinos opened. Local area businesses, especially small “mom and pop shops,” will start going out of business in local
communities as they will struggle to compete with elaborate cheap buffets and the marketing buying power that casinos bring to small markets.

The NGISC reported that for every $1 collected in tax revenue from the
casino, the state spends $3 to deal with the problems it creates. Dr. Earl Grinols of Baylor University and David Mustard of the University of Georgia in their study “Business Profitability vs. Social Profitability,” outlined gambling’s impact on local economies. Updating for 2006 numbers, $1.5 billion was gambled away in Missouri casinos. The state collected $314 million for taxes, however, with $814 million in social cost, there was a potential net loss of $500 million dollars.
