Meh, even though they call them 'lakes' the great Lakes, are basically small inland "seas" that eventually lead to the Atlantic Ocean

Edit: I will say this, although many of the beaches are man made u wouldn't say there was never any sand there.
Case in point, my dad and I were fixing some plumbing in the back yard of our building which happened to be a few blocks from the lake. Apprently the pipes were under our grass. So, you guessed it, we had to dig to get to the pipes.
After about a foot of dirt, there was nothing but sand below
