Being signed to a major doesn't mean you don't have the flexibility to incorporate certain aspects of your business....
Public Enemy was signed to Def jam when they incorporated one of the first urban clothing Lines....
Having an LLC registration doesn't nullify your relationship with the major ..
The same case with Macklemore
Warner Music Group (WMG) enhanced its independent distribution business by combining Ryko Distribution with ADA (alternative distribution alliance) to create an independent label service company that provides a suite of services including physical and digital global distribution, physical production, merchandise production and distribution. ADA started in 1993 to focus on independent music business.
Macklemore, has been around releasing mix-tapes since 2000. Add ADA and parent company Warner Music Group into the mix and that formula screams success. So lets put that “Indie” success story to rest permanently.

That is what Indy artists actually do. They pay to get the same access as those big labels, that doesn’t mean you are signed or owned by the big labels.
Shiet, I have friends that have used services like that, to get their music in stores and distribution.
Check out Digital Music Distribution | Sell music Online | MondoTunes they have the same distribution as universal. Does that mean if I do a deal with mondotunes to get my music in stores that I’m now under universals control?

Independance is paying to do things out of your own pocket.
If you buy your radio play, if you buy your distribution, that’s still independent.
Independent means you are callin the shots. Independent doesn’t mean you can't make deals with corporations.
