It's been crazy here. Maui's fire department had the fire contained on Tuesday afternoon. While everyone slept, winds whipped up to 80 mph (more on this) and spread embers, reigniting the fire while everyone slept and mop up fire crews tried to stomp out said embers. Fire spread while the tires battalions slept, burned the town overnight.
The winds are crazy because Hurricane Dora (low pressure air mass) is passing to the south while a massive high pressure air mass moved in from the north. This caused gradient winds (basically the high and low pressure trying to even out) that were gusting on Maui and the Big Island from 40-80 mph.

There have been recorded wildfires going back in Hawaii to the 19th century. Many of these fires were started intentionally
It doesn't matter if they were started intentionally. Climate change is setting the conditions to make wildfires (regardless of how they're started) worse.
Damn they're reporting 36 deaths so far
