The Deep State
Spanberger was running against a Republican.

Mamdani was running against a Republican and Democrat with very high name recognition and a family name that has carried weight in NYC for decades.

If Mamdani was facing a Republican one-on-one, it would have been 70-30 or something like that.
Mamdani barely got 50% in deep blue Manhattan and Cuomo was gaining at the end. Yall are misreading this

Mamdani's victory was impressive. Spanberger's victory was impressive. Every win was impressive on Tuesday, in fact. But you could also argue Mamdani and Spanberger had easier races. Mamdani was basically guaranteed to win the second he won the primary, running against a failed politician and a republican in a very liberal city. And the data makes it pretty clear that all the democrats romped in Virginia in large part due to outrage over DOGE/Trump gutting jobs in the state. Those were incredibly local elections and there's no point in trying to turn them into national stories about what works elsewhere. You run to win the state you're in, period.

Did you not read what I wrote?

What does Manhattan being "deep blue" matter when Cuomo was also a "blue" candidate?

Mamdani lost in the wealthiest parts of Manhattan (Upper East Side, Upper West Side, West Village, etc.) and won in the parts with more minorities and young people (Harlem, Morningside Heights, Washington Heights, Lower East Side, etc.).

The DSA is more hyped about challenging Jeffries than FLIPPING a red seat.

Stay focused.

Disagree he had to defeat the establishment donors republicans, Israeli lobbies and billionaires. Billionaires spent something like 20 million in attack ads on him.

But they didn't have anyone in the race to defeat him. Sliwa is never winning city-wide and Cuomo's failure in the primary sealed his fate. The only way Mamdani was gonna lose was if he dropped out due to scandal, and it was clear they didn't have jack shyt on him. It's similar to Obama 2007/2008 in the sense that they just didn't have anything.

Could it have gone left if Mamdani just went off the rails or something? Maybe. But nothing in the entire race suggested that was possible. He was incredibly disciplined from start to finish.
