thats their album budget. the advance is for living expenses and whatever is needed for their album. it has to be recouped. its basically a loan
Some artists do get a check every album once they submit the album. That was one of Wayne's grievances with Cash Money. He submitted Carter 5 and wanted his advance money.

It was always my understanding that a vast majority of acts never actually recoup... And if they do, it's deep into the album cycle of a project that has been a huge multi-platinum success (or they're an established superstar that has negotiated a deal with better splits)... So that most artists are eating off the frontend advanced and show money (which is the bulk of it), on top of whatever else they got leveraged from their fame...

Meek doesn't really fall into either of those two previously mentioned exceptions, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he hasn't saw any real substantial money on the back end of his projects....his albums always have a bunch of features and big name trendy of the moment producers....big budget videos, but never do crazy numbers.... certainly not the type of numbers that would force the label to re-do a more favorable deal until the current one is up... that's when a dude like Meek tries one of those pseduo-indie deals, but along with better splits... smaller advances and smaller album budgets come with that...and that's when you get that latter day Cam'Ron career arc

As far as him crying on Twitter about it, dunno...just seems embarrassing to me... threatening to release the details of a deal you voluntarily signed to what end? Shame the label into not honoring it? Good luck I guess

Zero sympathy for him or any rapper that chooses to bytch about a deal they willingly signed as a grown ass adult. I'm sure labels are tired of these nikkas that can't even honor contracts the label lost money on.

Brehs too quick to take the advance money to flex on nikkas then act surprised when they find out they gotta make that money back with interest :francis:

Brehs don't get it the big labels have got you cornered it's actually not that easy. Either you go with a big name and become somewhat mainstream or you struggle to keep your name out there as an indy. I can't recall off top of my head any new artists that has blown up as an indy. This goes to show that it really is not about the music anymore. Marketing influences people's music taste and what they perceive as good music.

I can't believe these dumb nikkas still falling for the bullshyt. nikkas down here been figured this shyt out or moved on from music completely to owning property and businesses. When I hear rappers crying about their contracts it just let me know they had no plan after music.

Independent money and invest.

Yep. They want hand outs from these big conglomerates instead of investing in themselves and going out to get it on your own. I'm tripping b/c he was rubbing elbows with the likes of Jay, Robert Kraft, the sixers owner, and didn''t pick up any game. Hell he got a label deal with Ross and this nikkas owns Wingstops and Checkers all over the place. No excuse for being this dumb crying about record labels not paying you. At this point in your career you shouldn't expect them to.

No he’s lying just like every other artist lies. They all signed a 4+1 album contract. The splits from the music that THE LABEL now OWNS is usually around 88% to 12%. The artist gets 12% after they have recouped your budget. We also going to take a % from your merchandise you sell and the tour you go on just to make sure we try as much as possible to get our money back. All in exchange for a cash advance of 50-200k depending on how hot you are at the time.

They all took this deal because they were broke. I give drake credit. He didn’t bytch and moan for 5 albums when he knew he was getting robbed by birdman. These guys all try to dip after 3 albums. Uzi just tried the same shyt his last album. Megan tried to fukking dip after ONE album :mjlol:

Watch Travis Scott is next. You don’t think he feels like he’s outgrown T.I’s Label Grand Hustle even though he’s 3 albums into a 5 album contract?

It's hard to keep on going to that creative well. These artists find that out too late. They're usually spent by the time they make it to 5 albums.

Meek has access to some very knowledgeable individuals who could probably help resolve this situation. Hope he sought advice before jumping on Twitter, as all he’s done is made people speculate who he’s referring to.

If you’ve not been paid crying on Twitter isn’t going to resolve it…Especially when you’re Meek Mill, I just see this as another Twitter finger rant.

He spends an awful lot of time hanging out with white power players for photo ops and when he needs a lawyer he's yelling into the Twitter void instead of using his network.

The same people he's bunny hopping for are actually friends with the same people that has him in a fukked up deal.
