Do you think the Knicks fear he will opt out and sign outright somewhere leaving them without the ability to sign/trade?
But his mid range game looks funny in the light, he's not a natural PF or SF, cant handle the ball, and shot horrible from the FT line

No. Because I don't think they want added salary. And if you sign and trade, unless it's with the perfect team... I don't think you can keep from bringing back 2-3 year deals. Which they don't want.
If you were going to do a sign and trade, you'd need multiple teams... a straight up trade would look something like this.
