The Utah Jazz have reportedly expressed interest in trading for Mike Conley as the Memphis Grizzliesgauge interest in their longtime point guard ahead of the Feb. 7 deadline.

Tony Jones of The Athletic reported the Jazz have spoken to Memphis but have not made a formal offer. The Grizzlies have started listening to offers for Conley and Marc Gasol amid their slide out of the Western Conference playoff race, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Conley, 31, is averaging 20.0 points, 6.0 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game this season. He's bounced back to potential All-Star form after being limited to 12 games in 2017-18 following an Achilles injury.

Ricky Rubio has been Utah's starting point guard the last two years but has never quite been a seamless fit. Rubio's worked best throughout his career as a more traditional pick-and-roll ball-handler, finding small seams with his passing prowess to set up teammates. Quin Snyder's structured offensive system calls for far less freelancing and a more egalitarian approach, though Rubio has adapted.

Conley would represent an upgrade from both a talent and schematic standpoint. He's better away from the ball than Rubio, just as good (if not better) defensively and is a far better spot-up shooter and scorer. Conley's jumper hasn't been at peak performance this season, but his worst year would represent a career best from Rubio.

Finding the right financial and talent mix would be the most difficult aspect of a Conley deal. Rubio and his expiring contract would be a starting point, but he's making less than half ($14.8 million) of Conley's salary ($30.5 million).

A package of Rubio and Derrick Favors could work, but that has little value to the Grizzlies. Perhaps adding Grayson Allen and a future first-round pick is enough to move the needle. Favors remains a valuable member of the Jazz rotation who has embraced his more limited role. The Jazz still believe in Allen despite his struggles as a rookie.

If the Jazz think Conley's the missing piece to put them in the conference finals conversation, though, it's an interesting package.

I've never been to Nashville, but I'm honestly surprised people are debating which city is booming. It's like comparing Cincinnati & Columbus. I'd say after Austin & Charlotte, Nashville is the next one up in the South as far fastest growing metro.

Memphis & New Orleans have a lot in common. Tourism is probably their biggest draw, & are just now trying to diversify their economies. But they're playing catch up to their neighbors.

On the basketball end, Memphis should've done this two years ago. They were never going compete with that core for a chip. Gasol & Conley had more value then. I dreamed of Morey pulling Gasol to the Rockets when they were dealing with Dmo.

Nashville is definitely on the come up and might be considered sexier but Memphis is no slouch since they're the home base for both Fed Ex and Auto Zone. Whites from foreign countries know about and visit Memphis just off Elvis Pressley and Graceland alone.

As a native born Memphian, we'll be fine. Teams have ups & downs, the Grizz aren't the first and won't be the last. We are always treated like the red-headed stepchild in the state of Tennessee. But you know what: a real American city like Memphis has character and history. The people has always worked for what they want, hence the grit n' grind mantra. Real working class folks who live in the heart of the bible belt and have a sense of pride in themselves. 65% Black, rich and poor...a lot of Black culture stemmed from Memphis. Every city has fallacies, our city isn't immune to it. But good food, great water, affordable cost of living, a renewed interest in building better communities is alright with me. The Grizzlies have a foundation in the city that will not move anytime soon. When the number one high school recruit in the nation left a preppy private Nashville high school to play at a public Memphis high school for a beloved Memphian...it got the cacs in state capital hot. Memphis is a blue city in a red state...The elected representatives in our state government are good ol' boys from the smallest hicktowns in Tennessee who think they can control what goes on in our city, but I digress. True fans will embrace the new front office over the course of this summer (I see no way they keep Chris Wallace after this season) and look to rebuild with JJJ as a new cornerstone to the franchise.

Wish I still lived in Memphis. When the Grizzlies were just average I pulled seats 5 rows up for 50 bucks. I can't imagine how cheap they will be once the team tanks.
