In terms of pure technical talent and ability, Lionel Messi is the greatest of all time. The only ones I could consider on his level in this category are: Pele, Maradona, Ronaldinho and possibly CR.
But exceptional ability isn't the sole prerequisite to being the GOAT. We're not like American sports fans either were stats are the sole the determining factor.
Its a a lot more complicated than that.

Its the reason why an argument like Pele vs Maradona is seen as legitimate. Logically it shouldn't be. Pele had far better statistics, accomplishments and did more for the game than Diego ever did all while having that exceptional ability and doing incredible things things with it. But Maradona did things with the ball that matched and exceed what Pele could do, and to top it of, won a WC with an average team. In comparison to Pele who played with absolutely stacked teams.
Its also the reason why Ronaldinho's name is in the running. Lets be honest he had at best 2 GOAT level seasons. But its that period between 2004-2007 that everyone goes back too that just has you :ooh:. The shyt he was doing was otherworldly, literally playing street football on the pitch and succeeding, winning titles and inspiring the current crop of footballers to play with flair. The late 90's to early 00's was plagued by creatively dead, unimaginative football both tactically and individually. He was the main reason we see players like Neymar, Hazard and Isco flourish today, the ones who thrive on entertainment and humiliation.

Football is the only sport where GOAT is subjective. Its not relatively unanimous like in Basketball (Jordan) or Hockey (Gretzky).
You will find people who say R9, Zidane, CR are the goat and they would have valid reasons to think so.

Personally for me its fluid, some days its Pele others its messi, etc.

While I agree it was an epic choke. Winning a World Cup is what matters most. He needs to win a World Cup regardless to complete his legacy and so does Ronaldo

NEW ERA
@BLAZO da GAWD you coming off mad defensive go ogling shyt and still you don't know shyt. Kaka never played with Ronaldo breh. It was Rivaldo that was feeding Ronaldo. Not Kaka :laff:

That's why I know you don't know shyt.

You brought up Messi scoring 4 goals and I showed you he scored against garbage teams yet he was carrying his team :laff:

I showed you Ronaldo scoring in every game in a world cup except versus England but you wanna sit here and type garbage.

Once again you prove my point, Messi is GOAT status when he has his Barca squad on his back. Funny all his highlights are from Barca. Don't tell me you wanna compare that Brazil squad to Barca or Argentina now breh. They had Carlos Rivaldo Ronaldinho and Cafu was old. Kaka was young and on the bench. They had Vampeta playing breh. Do you even know who the fukk Vampeta is. Look at Argentina squad breh. Aguero, Higuain (scored 36 goals in Serie A), Di Maria, Mascherano, Otamendi. Those are all time players to name a few. Your logic is flawed and you barely understand soccer except for stanning popular teams breh. Watching soccer doesn't mean you know the sport.

Messi himself was crying last night and was embarrassed by his performance but you want me to say he did well. You're a clown. Where ya red nose at ?
Did you really just call Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, and Otafukkingmendi all time players?!?! :dempsee:

Yeahhhhh...we're done here.

Ronaldinhio the GOAT to me. Messi is just his understudy. I never seen a guy play football so effortlessly with a smile on his face while destroying opponent. If he dedicated himself to training and not sleeping during training sessions he would be leagues ahead in my opinion.

thgis dumbass negga @BLAZO da GAWD said Pele wouldn't make a second team in today's game :dead:

Yet, Messi is the GOAT cuz he flourishes at Barca. Can you imagine Pele in a team with 3 of the top 5 players of his time ? :dead:

I don't even know why I'm engaging in this thread considering it's so freaking obvious how great Messi is. Look at his resume:

533 games for barcelona, 456 goals and 213 assists (!!!!!!!)
113 games for argentina, 55 goals and 40 assists.

Edit: Mind you, these numbers are him starting at the age of 17. His per game average is even more ridiculous if you look at his prime, let alone peak.

8 league titles
4 spanish cup titles
4 champions league titles

5 ballon d'ors
3 gold shoes
top goal scorer in la liga history (dude is 29!)

etc etc etc

So to sum it up, he's 29 years old and has scored over 500 goals (at the highest level possible) and has given 250 assists. He's won literally everything there is to win at club level, multiple times and he's been lost a world cup finals in overtime and lost two finals on penalities in copa america.

he's the ultimate winner and GOAT football player. THe fact that he has like 5-6 years at elite level left will make him virtually impossible to catch for anyone else in the future. It's Gretzky level of dominance.
This is cool, if you pretend everything is equal to everything.

Playing in the weakest, most imbalanced La Liga of all time is easier than playing in the strongest league of all time Seria A (80s-90s).

Playing for the most stacked team(s) of all time is easier than playing on regular teams.

And 1 World Cup = 10 La Liga titles or 5 CLs

Messi will be remembered as the unproven great. Great....as long as he had every advantage stacked in his favour at only the very best club.

Show me Ronaldo Lima or Maradona making passes like this:
You just told on yourself dummy

Maradona was a master playmaker. A much more creative passer than Messi. Nobody who knew what they were talking about would claim otherwise. Do your Googles.

In terms of raw talent and ability, Ronaldinho could do things that Messi wouldn't dream of.

And did you use Isco as a top example of individual brilliance? This is a dire time for "creatively dead, unimaginative football both tactically and individually". You missed Euro 2016 or something? Compared to the turn of the century this is footballs dark ages. Euro 2000 was the best I've seen and this is the worst. Look at the names of the players who got busy at Euro 2000 and tell me there is more individual flair now. Reads like a Who's Who

UEFA Euro 2000 knockout stage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barely a decent striker in Europe right now. Brazil had flair player after flair player and now all they can scrape together is Neymar. Forget about this idea that football has more individual quality now.
