But I was actually taught meteorite as a fact/theory in middle and high school.

We can say (after the theory is challenged) that it was ONLY a theory, but realistically most of the leading theories are treated as 'facts of the time' and people will really get upset for others challenging the so called proven institutionalized theories.

I actually was taught this volcano killing the dinosaurs theory in college.
Science sometimes misses some people, because they change the theory every other year in some instances. What was the point in making the theory in the first place and speaking about it as fact??

Newtonian physics and relativity are now thrown in the same boat as common origin and meteorites killing brocosaurus. It's the things that are not actually fact, that are defended the most in science.

Some one could be chastised and clowned by a less intelligent person, just because the unintelligent person is a professional at regurgitating scientific dogma.. When in reality it's less foolish to take these unproven theories with a grain of salt.

Another reason its so hard to take white folks and their theories seriously. How long have they been teaching damn near as a fact that a meteorite started the ice age and killed off the dinosaurs. Now its oops it was a volcano and idiots immediately get in line and follow the new gimmick. Sad.

SAN FRANCISCO — Volcanic activity in modern-day India, not an asteroid, may have killed the dinosaurs, according to a new study.

Tens of thousands of years of lava flow from the Deccan Traps, a volcanic region near Mumbai in present-day India, may have spewed poisonous levels of sulfur and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and caused the mass extinction through the resulting global warming and ocean acidification, the research suggests.

The findings, presented Wednesday (Dec. 5) here at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union, are the latest volley in an ongoing debate over whether an asteroid or volcanism killed off the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago in the mass die-off known as the K-T extinction.

"Our new information calls for a reassessment of what really caused the K-T mass extinction," said Gerta Keller, a geologist at Princeton University who conducted the study.

For several years, Keller has argued that volcanic activity killed the dinosaurs.

But proponents of the Alvarez hypothesis argue that a giant meteorite impact at Chicxulub, Mexico, around 65 million years ago released toxic amounts of dust and gas into the atmosphere, blocking out the sun to cause widespread cooling, choking the dinosaurs and poisoning sea life. The new research "really demonstrates that we have Deccan Traps just before the mass extinction, and that may contribute partially or totally to the mass extinction," said Eric Font, a geologist at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, who was not involved in the research.
